Best mild buck a stick?

I'm sure you all have run into this - a non-:mn friend stops over and you end up lighting one up for him/her.

Now I like to think I am a pretty generous dude, but I hate to see a $4 or $5 cigar go to waste on someone who is going to puff it a half dozen times then toss it in the trash can or worse tough it out because they feel bad and end up turning green.

I would like to have a stash for $1 smokes for them to enjoy and not feel like they need to finish or feel bad about if they don't like or just don't want it anymore.

Any recommendations?

I have been checking out the CI catalog and was thinking about:

1 - Free Cuba Robusto - $50 for 50
2 - Olivero Corona Grande - $24.95 for 25
3 - 1876 Reserve Robusto - $44.95 for 50
4 - Flor del Toro #4 (maybe not as mild?) - $39.99 for 40
5 - Albion Robusto (have 2 of these, haven't lit up yet) - $49.99 for 50
6 - Palma Real Lionsdale - $39.99 for 50
7 - Oro Cubano Robusto - $39.99 for 50

or maybe something from the "Everything $19.99" section? Or even another shop, I am not married to CI.

Forgot to add - Of course, the devil site is an option!

Generally what I would do is get one of each and smoke them all, but I don't think that all of the cigars in this class are available as singles.

As always, thanks for the feedback and suggestions. :tu

The Free Cuba is made by Tropical and is a pretty good Fuma.(ie sandwich) Others for the price are La Vieja Habana by Drew Estate...they come in different wrappers. Gran Habano has a Fuma as well...they also have a long filler cigar the GR Special which goes for about 2 bucks.

For mild sticks, you could also check out Marsh Wheeling Stogies (the original) or Travis Club Senators with Connecticut Shade wrapper. They are machine made and less than a buck. But they are all tobacco.

I think Flor De Oliva hands down. This is my favorite morning smoke with coffee and my everyday go to. Around $2 a stick or less.

This is an area in which I have been accumulating some expertise by virtue of my budget.

Quorum:
I have been smoking alot of quorum cigars at the local b&m, the 5x50 size, and they are good smokes as well as good smokes for the money. At about $18 per bundle of 20 (depending on where you buy) they are a deal. They are short filler nic puros, out of maybe the dozen or so I have smoked, one had a wrapper that unravalled as I smoked it, but it was still smokeable. These cigars are by no means a complex banquet of flavors, but do have a pleasant enough sweetish if slightly monotonous taste.

Consuergas:

These are available at jrs and actually need at least a week or two to sit after you get them, but are a good mild to med cigar. I believe these are villazon seconds. I have had the #15, #9 and #30. The 9 and the 30 are the best I have had so far.

Old fashioned:

Seconds again. I have tried the #40, good mild to medium smoke, good off the truck.

Flor de Oliva:

I have tried the Corojo and its excellent. Its a little spicy and maybe too much for a new smoker, but excellent for the money, imo.

Just in case you think I have no taste in cigars at all, my favorite smokes at the local b&m, when I have the dough, are Sancho Panza Extra Fuerte and JDN Antanos. I usually smoke the above because I only budget myself a few bucks play money each day.

What I do is go to Mike's Cigars and order the Old Fashions. They are short fillers but are supposed to be made from seconds of premium tobacco. The band isn't much I just take it off.
I'm sure you will get many options here, this is just what I do in that situation.

I usually hand out these to my infrequent-smoking friends, & they seem to enjoy them:
5 Vegas Gold Robustos ($1.50-$1.70@ on CBid)
Felipe Dominican Robustos or Coronas (about $1.50@ on CBid)
Nestor Conneticut Robustos ($1.25-$1.50 on CBid)
El Mejor Espresso ($1.00-$1.25@ on CBid)

This is a great topic. I too have been searching for a mild to medium smoke for friends or relatives. To me though, I do not want to turn off new smokers by giving a poor cigar. I want to recruit new smokers....

So far I have some leads but maybe someone out there has experience with these:

Stogie Guys review of an inexpensive house brand.

Plus, Atlantic Cigars has a brand called Spanish Galleon Classic that is claimed to be as good a Ashton Classic.

If anyone has experience with these, I'd like to hear about it.

Atlantic has the robustos on for $16/bundle. Bought a bundle for my brother-in-law, a new smoker, to fill up a humi I bought him for Christmas and he digs em.

The Famous Smoke Shop - Famous Dominican 2000 is a real mild stick and is long filler. You can pick these up for under a dollar on their auction site (cigarauctioneer.com). Construction is nothing to apoligize for and with some humidor time are a decent stick. Their Nicaraguan 1000 is not as mild but is a very good stick. Hope this helps.

Lately, I've been smoking the Double Happiness by La Aurora. The Presidente. They are mild, but what makes them stand out is their construction. Of the 20 or so I've smoked, not one had burn problems. They're very consistant. Cheap on cbid or CI.

Well thanks for all the replies, I certainly wasn't expecting a consensus so I am not surprised a bit about all the different replies.

It is reassuring to me that stocking a cheap smoke for non-cigar smokers is not a bad idea or cheap and selfish!

I think I am going to take a shot on something I can get a small package of, a mazo of 25 or 20 vs. a box of 50. It will be a little while before I order, so keep 'em coming.

Thanks.

I think I might have one of these in the Humi, I didn't know it was a lower end smoke. I will give this and the Albion a shot, might as well the sample the ones I have!

Slightly OT, but how on Earth is anyone to order from that section of Famous' catalog where they have their private label brands? They have at least 25 different blends, and the descriptions give you nothing to go on to make a choice between them. I landed a bundle of them at a ridiculous price from the devil site, and then went to their catalog to get some more when they proved a good cheap stick for moochers, and even me. (Great, now we are back to the topic) They were Honduran 200 Robustos, and after a couple months forgotten inside one of my cabinets, they are really pretty good, and my winning bid was $11 for 20 of them. No band, but your typical moocher will never miss it anyway, and I will never be embarrassed by the quality of this stick if the moocher turns out to know what he's smoking. I think they are about double that or a little more to order them straight from Famous.

But (back to OT rant) how in the world is anyone to decide whether to order the Dominican 100 or 4000 or the Nicaraguan 600 or the Honduran 2000, or whatever? They give you almost no clue. Yet they clearly sell a ton of these smokes, because this section of their catalog keeps getting bigger and bigger, as they add more and more blends. At least J&R pretends their private label brands are like something else you might know, so they give them phoney names of popular sticks to compare them to. These names bear no resemblance to the vitolas they are selling, but at least it gives you something to hope for, when you take that leap of faith and order some.

But Famous? Hey Zaretzky, wise up and give those things some names, or at least get someone on your payroll to smoke some and write a review, or at least a decent description. These smokes are not half bad, and if you got on your game you could give J&R (and Altadis) a run for their money, instead of running such a poor second to their magnificent marketing machine. </rant>

Being a cheap cigar smoker, I have tried almost everything on your list. IMO none of the ones I tried were worth reordering. Grab yourself a bundle of these. I pounce on them every time they come up on Cbid. PM me your addy and I'll send you one to try.
