I *really* like the idea of supporting local merchants (cigar, stereo, the small hardware store around the corner...whatever) but in practice it usually leads me to much frustration - driving around town all day, and they either don't have what I want, or they want ridiculous $$$ for it AND act...

Yep...I get a weekly "allowance", like a 12 year old. Every Saturday morning, I log into our bank's web site and transfer $250 from our joint checking account to my personal account. It's for gas, lunch, cigs, sticks, bullets, etc.
