Are you purging as you smoke? That helps to keep the burn even as well as burn off the tar buildup.
I know some BOTLs that do it gently with every puff, and others that do the occasional power purge.

A lot would depend on the environment. If the native RH is 60-70% you can leave the stick out for a very long period of time with little to no ill effects. If you were visiting a desert with a >10% RH your sticks will dry out much faster.

I'm fortunate to be able to herf almost every weekday with a couple of my CS buddies right here at work and then go home for a quiet one by myself or with the wife if it isn't to cold. What can I say, life is good.:tu
Smoking on an empty stomache is a real no no for newbies. If you try it again keep something sweet to nibble on as many find that it helps when you get a bit queezy. Personally I'd rather eat first and then enjoy the cigar. I think of it as an extremely low calorie dessert.:ss
