What does spanish cedar offer to the cigars that other woods do not? Or is it just more tradition than anything else?

I am starting a tupperdor until i can tell if my humidor is holding humidity. Do I need a piece of spanish cedar in it to hold humidity when I open it? Or will the cigars hold enough humidity so that it will not matter? It seems like each time it opens the humidity would escape really quickly...
