Angel 100 La Joya...Age Before Beauty

Dead Man Walking
When it comes to the Angel 100 people seem to love them or hate them, as for myself I'm an Angel 100 lover.

The Angel 100 was a limited run cigar put out by the Oliva Tobacco Company not to be confused with the Oliva Cigar Company. I tasted my 1st Angel 100 about 2 1/2 years ago and that was not so much by design but instead it came as a freebie from JR Cigars as a throw in extra. Packaged in boxes of five sticks it arrived JR "wet". I fired one up a few days after receiving them and man they were harsh!! But sometimes age can do wonders. A lot of time has passed since I sampled my 1st Angel and many more fiver's have come my way.

So now to the nuts and bolts. Last night, well this morning around 3AM I dug into my Angel stash and pulled out a Angel 100 La Joya from the bottom of the humi....marked 5/06. This one was from one of my earliest purchases.

The Angel 100 La Joya is a pressed 6 x 54 Toro. I tested the RG with my handy new CS RG tool. :tu The cigar was dark and veiny and looks wise was a bit on the rough side. I've recently been punching my cigars instead of cutting them so I punched away. After putting the torch to it I immediately felt vindicated about my choice to stick with these and let them age. What I found was a wonderful full bodied cigar, not a lung chucking experience but a very smooth full bodied cigar. Draw had improved, burn for the most part was excellent and flavor, a sweetness with tastes of pepper as well as a woody taste. Halfway through the cigar the intensity of it's "fullness" picked up, not overwhelming but enough so to remind me I had attacked this cigar on an empty stomach. All in all I found this Angel 100 to be a great smoke that had shucked it's Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde characteristics and having moved light years past the cigar I had 1st smoked and had found far from pleasing.

Since discontinued it can still be found at times on Cbid in the smaller RG, i.e. the Angel 100 1961 & OTC.

Like I said in the begining the Angels can be a love/hate type of relationship. I've sent a heck of a lot of Angel 100's off to other BOTL over the past couple of years with mixed results. But I do think they are worth a try if you can find them.

Yep, and I'm fortunate to be one of those recipients. John got me started with these and now I have a 20 count humi full to the rim with 1961s/OTCs. There's probably 40 or so in there (Tetris-stryle), resting with anticipation. I, too, have been sending them out here and there to let others know of their goodness. These guys still can be had on Cbid for around $40/25 sticks. A really good deal, IMHO.

Thanks again, John! And nice review!

A solid cigar to be enjoyed with no hype surrounding. This is the type of cigar that one should stock up plenty for aging purpose. How much for stocking ? I would say at least 15-20 five-pack that comes in the little wooden box. I stocked up pretty good the last sale from CI. I guess it is time for me to light up this stick of jewel.

Wise move on your part. I have a couple hundred of the Angels left in various sizes. :tu Have you had a chance to sample the La Meca or La Joya?

Thanks for the review - getting the lowdown on little-known brands is one of the greatest things about the BOTL's here. If I ever come across any Angels I'll be sure to scoop them up and age them!

great cigars, I've had a couple that were good enough to be labeled super-premium based on the flavor, fortunately not a super-premium price :tu

spot on with the age/RH PJ, harsh wet and nice and smooth when properly settled

I've really enjoyed the OTC. These are great cigars, and even greater at their price point. Thanks for the review.

Yep, I decided this morning I missed having some in the cooler also, and on the list I went. I got my first in 06 too, PJ, and had almost the same experience as yourself.
Funny though, when I went to check my bid, and adjust it a bit, the software moved me to the bottom of the list, I didn't think that would happen, considering my initial bid was still valid and in the top 30 or so.

Very nice cigar, thanks for the reminder!

I've had the pleasure of smoking two (all I had, both gifted to me) recently...now to find some more!

Great review. I just bought a couple of sampler packs from P Da Masta and he is throwing in a 5 pack of these. Good to know I should let them rest for a bit. I will check with him to see how long they were in his humi.

Nice Review, PJ! I, too, really enjoy the "Angels". Bought some 6 months ago through www.joecigar.com for a nice price! Definitely worth a try!:tu
