Anyone use one of these for ventilation?

Living in Michigan, I am looking for ways to be able to smoke inside during the winter months without spending a ton of money on a ventilation system, air purifier, etc. I came across this unit and wondered if anyone here had any experience with it:

It looks like it would be an ideal solution, but I wonder how much air it really moves and whether it would effectively clear a room with a cigar or two going. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

That system cleans the incomming air. Your room would be very cold because whatever you take out of the room you have to replace.

If I were you I would just use a fan in one window(pointed out) and keep another window open. This way the air is always being replaced

Thanks, Rudder. If you don't mind, take another look at it and click on the video link. It is only 30 seconds or so and indicates to me that it vents the air in the room, captures the heat from it, and then heats the air coming in from outside. Maybe I am misunderstanding something, but it is intriguing given its low cost and potential to not make me freeze, like would happen if I have windows open during the dead of winter.

It looks like it is a energy recovery ventilation system. It also appear to use a small electric heater on the incoming air to make up for the heat exchanger being less then 100% efficient. I could not find any specs on volume of air moved by the unit but if it moves enough I would say it would work great. If you are trying to keep the smoke confined to one room remember to block off the return air vent to your furnace while you are smoking. If you try it let us know how it works out.

That's a great point on the return air vent. I am definitely trying to keep it in one room. Thanks for the thoughts. I will let everyone know how it works out when I go ahead with it.

I purchased one of these http://www.bionaire.com/productDetails.aspx?pid=2007&cid=128

It could be something for you to look at. It can blow air into the room with both fans, exchange air with one bringing air in and the other blowing air out, or both fans blowing out which is what I use it for while smoking. It also comes with extenders to match the length of your windows to prevent drafts, ect..
In the winter months it does pretty well since it's constantly blowing out there isn't a real temperature change in the room. Plus it comes with a remote! Always a plus. :tu

Hope this helps

That's great too, thanks! I am all about trying to find economical ways to smoke indoors because at this point, my wife isn't too wild about me spending a couple thousand dollars on a state of the art ventillation system. Do you leave it running for long after you smoke, or do you find it to clear the room enough while you are in there to turn it off when you are done in the room?

Also, how loud is it?

Yeah I had my basement finished not too long back and I wasn't about to redo everything. The room I use has two windows anyway so I thought I would give it a go and has worked great for me so far.
If I do leave it running it's only for about 20 minutes, but usually I don't have to. I can have background music on and never hear it when it's on medium. It is noticeable when you carry on a conversation, but nothing you have to talk over even when it's on high.
I also use one of these (http://www.surroundair.com/multi-tech-2.htm) air purifiers and set it to run for 4 hours and start it when I start smoking and it does a great job of cleaning the air.
The next morning the room has a fresh smell to it.

I thought about using the everfresh as well, but it didn't seem big enough to take all the smoke out, especially when you get more than one person smoking in my room.

Well it is nice to have options to consider. Thanks for the feedback. I may go the fan route since it is slightly cheaper and apparently proven. I always dread winter around here, but maybe I won't have to anymore :tu

Good luck! Let us know what you end up with and how it works for ya!

I'm curious how this will work also. I am moving in with a non smoker in December so keeping my room ventilated is going to be important. I have one of those dual fan window units now and it works pretty well so hopefully it works out at the new place.

Keep us updated on what you choose!

I went on EBAY and got one of these for $129 after the bidding was all done and I had won. I had one of these about 12 years ago and lost it and it worked amazingly to remove cigar smoke and purify the air.

Thanks. I may consider a purifier as well. I think I'll check out how the room does without a purifier and determine if one is needed after that. That looks like a good unit though.
