Cold Weather Travel & Storage

Folks,
A question regarding storage.
I'm doing a cross-rockies ski trip that will span 2 weeks, and will be camping out of my car; so the cigars I bring will be subjected to freezing cold. Now I know that you freeze cigars to get rid of the beetles and all, but what if you have to store them in the cold, and then smoke them right away? Is it sufficient to thaw the stick for a few hours and then enjoy, or will the cold dry them out too much? What should I do to ensure I my ample supply is adequate and servicable?

RE: Cold Weather Travel & Storage

Well, it may not be good for them but I have had cigars in the car that have gotten cold (8 hours) in below freezing temps and I fired them up and they smoked fine.

I live in Buffalo, so I have some experience with this. I've left cigars in the car for about two days in sub-freezing temperatures (I believe it was last August). I had them in my travel humidor, which I wouldnt recommend. I didnt have much of a problem, but here are the dangers. Dont freeze and thaw more than once and dont do it quickly...this can cause them to crack and will mess up their humidity levels. Also, remember that as the temp drops, the RH rises becauses cold air can hold less moisture. If you treat everything with care, I think that while not ideal, everything will be OK. If I were you, I would bring along a digital hygrometer and maybe even a good supply of those chemical hand warmers, and see if you can keep the temperature above freezing. Your best bet would probably be to use a small cooler for this.

Good luck and let us know how everything turns out.

Actually there has been much debate as to the effect of temp on RH.... I'm not sure that I would agree that you need to adjust RH based on your temp.

I wouldn't worry about it. If you are at all concerned about the smokes not tasting their best... don't bring your best smokes. Instead, bring some less expensive, but still enjoyable smokes and light them up worry free.

You're on vacation! Who the hell want's to be firing up hand warmers to keep their smokes warm while their on vacation! Just bring some decent smokes that you enjoy and pay no mind to the temp. If your packing around though you're gonna want to make sure they are in something that won't get crushed... that would suck.

Hope you have fun!

I smoked one I left in the truck last night 18 below it warmed me right up after work. For a couple weeks of this low humidity I think you might need something... the constant changes might be tough on them. Might use a cooler and humi-pouch.

Also I remember the old days traveling like this, Back then I smoked more swishers and other things ;)

Well, just got in from WY, UT, and CA mountains. Temp lows were around 10 degrees Fahrenheit. I just used a tupperdor for about 2 weeks, and when I lit up some nice sticks I was just sure to "defrost" them on the counter of the bar for a half hour or so. No problems, I particularly enjoyed a Punch Punch on one occasion...it warmed me up quite nicely :) Seemed like as long as the cigars weren't exposed to constant freeze/thaw they survive quite well. Thx for the help.

I would stay in the hotel room with the heater on high & smoke to your hearts content. LOL
