Container for beads?

I just ordered some Rh beads for a brand new large cabinet humidor. So far I have used Oasis foam material so I will be using beads for the first time. My question is, I have read several threads mentioning the use of cloth bags and such for the beads, is that a requirement? Or could I just simply use a plastic container with a perforated lid like tupperware?

My second question is, how do you use distilled water for the beads? Do you gently moist them or get them soaking wet?

Thanks in advance!

Jorge

I bought a plastic butter dish at meijer for about $3 and turned the lid over. Works perfectly well in my 150 ct. In my cooler, I use a piece of tupperware without a lid on it. That works well also. I don't have a cover on either.

As for the beads, most people say mist them until they are half clear and half white. I usually just fill the cap on my distilled water jug with water and dump it directly on the beads when they need it. For the desktop, one capfull is usually enough to get it back to where it needs to be and it hasn't hurt the beads yet. Just my :2.

You may want to put them in panty hose or a bag just in case you knock it over they won't spill. then just toss the bag in the bowl.:2

:tpd: Or you can use the case from the floral foam hydro... just rip it out, rinse, fill with beads and put the cap back on.

or you can also buy preforated tubes from heartfelt or even JR Cigar.com I think

These types of devices are used so that the most surface area possible can be exposed

if you use a container with a lid that would work, or use a bag/pantyhose. As the others mentioned you don't want them to spill. i've knocked them over before and its a pain in the rear to get those tiny little things up.

As far a adding water, you will wan to just sit a sponge or a glass of distilled water next to the beads as opposed to direct contact. As Scott Shilala will tell you and I can confirm from personal experience, the beads will often crack when water is added directly to them.

Cracked beads work just as well as whole ones, Viper has made several posts affirming this. There is no problem using a plastic container, but you will switch over to bags, pantyhose or a tube the first time you spill them. :dr

I ordered some tubes; should I leave them in the tubes or put them in the floral foam humidifier that originally came w/ my humidor? Im tempted to do the floral foam replacement for looks, but also hear that more surface area, ie. tubes, is ideal.

The main thing IMHO is to spread the beads out and make sure they're not too deep so you expose more surface area.
I'm using my wife's pickle dish. She doesn't know yet. Don't tell her. :tu

They work just as well if cracked, but if you have the tubes Viper sells the cracked pieces will fall out and create "snow" in the humi. I am speaking from personal experience. On the Viper note, I have bought from Heartfelt several times and had nothing but the best experiences.

I use panty hose on two of my shelves and the reservoir that came with my Set and Forget on the other. They work equally well.

Unless you're hurting for space in your humi, I'd leave them in the tubes. :2
