I just received a digital little havana hygrometer and discovored to my horror that my humidor is only maintaining about 40% humidity. The el Cheapo analog (which I thought I calibrated correctly) has been reading between 75% and 80% for the past couple months. I have not been smoking much lately so I did not notice how dry my cigars were until I put in the digital. I have about 80 cigars in the my humidor.
I am worried about re-hydrating/humidifying my dried out cigars.

1. What is the best method to restore them?
2. Did I do any permanent damage?
3. How long should I wait to smoke them?

I am anxiously awaiting all replies! Thanks in advance.

hey,
be careful to re-humidify very slowly or they could stary coming unwrapped. there is no set method as far as I know, but I would keep them as far from the humidifier as possible during the process, certianly not directly underneath. If your humi. has a tray empty it and use it as a kind of barrier between the cigars and the humidifier. If not get some thin cedar sheets like some cigars come wrapped in and cover the smokes, this should help them from coming up too fast. I would wait at least a month or so to let them get good and done.
And lastly yes, there is a chance they won't taste the same after drying out.:-(

Buntified,

Ditto what Fireman said. Bring them back slowly. You might want to "lightly" charge your humidification device. Or maybe put the humidifier in a zip lock and punch a few holes in the bag.

The good news is that the cigars will come back. Give them 2 or 3 weeks. My dad had a 30 year old box of Zinos that were bone dry and still in the original box and cello wrappers. They came back in about 3 weeks. Good luck.

you will be able to bring them back so that they will smoke properly (remember to do so slowly, as the other have mentioned) but, sorry to say this, if they have been dry for a long time, many of the oils that give cigars their flavor will have dried out. Its worth a shot though, and remember, patience is the key. Good luck

Thank you all for your replies. My humidity is up to 51% and seems to be climbing slowly. I am shooting for 10% per week. I am still looking for a good humidfication device. I can't decide between the Diamond Crown XL or Climaxx Beads. Thanks again!

AAlmeter,

Good point about the oils. The Zinos are "smokable", but don't taste like much. I was just amazed that they came back.
