Humidity Help!

Hey everyon,

I just got back from my trip and checked the humidor- while my built in hygro read a solid 65%, the stogies inside were mushy and soggy to the touch! Upon closer inspection, I noticed that a bunch of the wrappers had burst near the foot.:mad:

Im bummed out because a bunch of my favorite smokes were ruined, but even moreso, I am worried for the rest of my smokes.

How can I control my humidity?
(Here is my current setup:)
This Humi:

This gel:

Using the hygro on the front of the humi.

Any help you guys can offer would be great!

Thanks

1) Glass top humis are harder to maintain a constant Rh
2) Analog hygrometers are innacurate-try calibrating
3) Gel is good at adding Rh, but not as good at removing excess Rh-Get some beads.:2

Assuming that no sneaky elves came along and pissed in yer humidor to cause this....:D

you need to get the humidity down slowly...

I rotate beads (about 1lb or more) I dry one pound slowly with warm air from a hairdryer then i trade it out with the beads in the humi...then repeat when the beads are turning clear from moisture absorbtion...but i haven't yet had a problem to this extent.

there are other de-humidifying agents that can be had at RV supply stores but i would not venture a guess at if this could affect the taste...

any other gorillas know what the de-humidifying stuff is that's safe to use?

I dont think I want to trust a crappy analog hygro anymore- can somone point me in the direction of a reliable digital?
Also what does a pound of good beads cost? Is heartfelt the place to get them?

All of the digital hygros are very accurate but you still need to calibrate them. The adjustable ones are nice. I can never remember which of my other hygros are the -2 or the +1.

You wont need a pound of beads for that humi. I use a pound in each vinotemp. I would think a couple of 1 oz tubes should do the job. Or if you buy from Cigarmony, they have the Puck, which is also filled with beads. I think the tubes would work better in a glasstop. :2

Bobarian - why tubes in a glasstop, specifically? I just refurbished a glass top and would appreciate the advice...

also, why are beads at cigarmony so much more $$$

Go digital hygrometer, the type that can be recalibrated. Get some 65% beads and your problems will be over.

Here is a good source....David is a fellow BOTL and has an excellent reputation.

he has everything you need. After using these tubes with 65% beads in all my coolers for the last 2 years......I will never use anything else. They are so easy to maintain and take all the worry out of cigar storage.

I like simple and worry free.

:confused:ooooooooooooohhh, thanks for clearin' that up for me...

does glasstop not hold humidity as well as solid??

:D

The puck should go in the bottom of the humidor as with all humidification, not the top. Humidity rises. Glasstops are as good as any well-built humidor. I have several and they are steady as a rock.

I recommend getting a Caliber III digital meter. I bought them because the bomb techs I knew use them. If it is trusty enough to keep an eye on explosives, it is good enough for your exploding cigars :hn

Like others said a well made glasstop is just as good. I would go with tubes as apposed to a puck in a glass top because the non-glass tops usually have a cut out for the round puck where as the glasstops don't.
