Humidity???

Josh Pip

I bought a vino a few weeks back. I made several shelves and trays from spanish cedar. I purchased 65% beads and put 1lb of the beads sprayed with distilled water and two small bowls of distilled water in the vino with the trays and shelves. The first 24 hours went very well humidity right around 65% and removed the bowls of water. Then it began to climb and is now holding right around 72%. The humidity does not change if i take all the beads out for a day. I am pretty baffled... I am measuring the humidity with a caliber III. Can some one please help?

Thanks, Pip :tu

Couple of questions that might need to be answered first.

What size Vino?
How many cigars do you have there? boxes or loose?
Did you test your Hygro?
Did you measure your RH prior to putting the water and beads in?
Is your ambient temp consistent where the vino is stored?
Did you plug your drain hole or is it open?

In my Vino's I find that if the ambient temp fluctuates then the RH will move as well (typically only a few degrees) but settles just right.

It is likely that your stabilization just hasn't settled as yet. Also in my opinion your are right on the cusp of just enough beads. I like to use double the recommended as I find it keeps things far more stable with less maintenance.

My :2 for what it is worth so far.

It is a 28 bottle, hygro was tested, didn't test prior, i have probably 75 singles no boxes, drain hole is plugged and ambient varys maybe 10 degrees between day and night.

Your problem may be too much empty space. Try putting a few empty cigar boxes inside and see if that help settle things. Just my:2.

Empty boxes or even broken box pieces should help stabilize things. Also, be sure only half your beads are clear. Too many clear and there are none left to take up the excess moisture that will occur when the vino cycles. Your smokes will also be more stable in closed boxes as they will not be open to the change in rh when the unit cycles. :2

I salt tested my Caliber III and after 24 hours it was dead nuts on 75%.:tu So, I took my beads out and put the hygro in with the beads and put the tupperware cover on them and after about 30 minutes the hygro was up to 80%!

My beads are WAY to wet! Need to dry them out. Gonna do some research about this is done.

Pip.

P.S. Thanks for all the info!:ss
