Will Whore for Cigars
Hey all. Time for another trip to illinoishoosier's review corner.
Tonight's smoke is the Man O' War. Got a sampler of these and we will be burning the Robusto tonight.
Here are the particulars:
Man O' War Robusto 5x50
Wrap: Habano
Filler: Nicaraguan
The happy victim.
The initial aroma is grassy and sweet. This is a nice dark cigar. The band is pretty cool! Very solid feeling cigar. The cap, however, is not quite right. Looks like the roller shorted the top cap. Clips nicely with the Palio. The initial draw is tight, but not bad. The initial taste is a sweet molasses like flavor.
Lights easily with the Nibo Dual Flame. Nice leathery flavor upon lighting with a little tingling on the lips.
5 mins in...
My other smoking buddy, "Buddy" shows up tonight. Yo Yo has taken the night off. Buddy is not as much a ham as Yo Yo.
The burn is nice and the draw is still snug, but not uncomfortably so. Still leathery with just a little bit of that molasses. Nice amount of smoke on draw, but it dissipates quickly. The cap flaw is a little annoying, didn't quite get it all with the clip. This is burning nice and slow.
10 minutes in...
Burn is still pretty good and slow. Smoke is picking up and I am getting a little spice now on the leather. Ash is medium gray and flaky. Tapped ash already because it was flaking as I moved the cigar. Two taps and it dropped.
20 minutes in and have started to feel a little pepper on the back of the throat. The flavor is pretty consistent and the draw is still snug. Burn is a little ragged after ashing.
After 30 minutes, the spiciness has picked up. The ash is still flaky. The spice on the throat is more pronounced and is not very pleasant.
The 40 minute mark...
Ash is really flaky. With each puff, some ash flakes off. The spice has really come to the forefront. Leaving that spice on the throat is really harsh. The flavor, while getting strong, is not bad, but the harshness on the throat is really off putting.
Ten minutes later, the leather has thankfully started to return. Stick is giving off a nice woody aroma. Ash color and consistency is the same. Definitely a slow smoke. Starting to pick up another flavor now, almost tea like as I let it sit in my mouth.
1 hour...
The flaky ash is really annoying. I am starting to wear ot now! Flavor though, has smoothed out to a nice woody leather and the harshness on my throat is much less. About 20 minutes ago, the draw opened up. Burn is still a little ragged and will need a touch up.
Hit the 70 minute mark. the smoke coming off has a sweet spicy smell. The last third of this cigar is definitely a winner.
80 minutes...
The harshness has all but gone away and it has really smoothed out. Even the ash is behaving now. Hmmm, maybe a Nub candidate!
90 minutes and done...
Unfortunately, the harshness has returned and I am going to let it die here. Starting to feel a little bit of nic buzz right now.
I was all set to give this a 2.5 after the first half, but the back end really saved it. The flavor just didn't do it for me and that harshness on my throat was not pleasant at all. It really smoothed out into a fine cigar at the end.
I am definitely going to let the remainder of the sampler rest a bit more. This only had three weeks on it.
I give this smoke 3 Indianapolis Colts Cheerleaders out of 5.
