Omar Ortiz Originals Toro

Addiction

Gentleman Jim Stogie
I post a lot of reviews so if you look in this section at all you probably know that I can completely destroy a cigar review based on appearance. I have skipped over the significant study of major lines (notably Camacho and Tatujue) because of my plain brown wrapper syndrome. Its amazing to me that I’ve even bought unbanded cigars so I don’t know how I stumbled onto the Omar Ortiz Originals Toro.

Its unbanded and it comes in a rough hewn box, and this plainness is offset by the fact that my B&M has several boxes on hand and even the imprints on the boxes don’t line up. On top of that the cigar quite frankly looks a little rough hewn, all lumpy bumpy as it is. The cap of several of the ones I examined was uneven. But man this thing smells good, nice nut aroma with the slightest whiff of freshly sliced figs. I feel pretentious even using the reference to the scent but its true. The prelight draw after dismissing the cap is more of the same. No soft spots and it is solid to the squeeze.

The stick lights pretty easy, and the smoke is almost aromatic even from the toasting before you even pull. Drawing this stick on the pull is reminiscent to taking a packet of sugar and stirring it into two cups of water. Its sweet smoke but not overly enough to attach a sweet flavor to it, only a sweet quality. There is a flavor of lightly toasted nuts to go along with the sweet reference almost like a toasty piece of some kind of nut based bread. There is also the slightest touch of coffee in each taste as well. As you progress the length of the stick the coffee becomes noticeable but barely, and the sweetness hides itself between the nuts and the coffee. The construction as poor as it might look turns out to be excellent, even at the half inch mark there is almost no heat at the fingers and only the heat of it in the draw. It also holds almost two inches of ash and doesn't get super soft at the nubbing.

I’d say it was a medium bodied stick but lately everything seems medium or weak except for the exceptionally high powered babies.

Final Verdict –A must smoke, must stock. Truly the most outstanding stick I’ve smoked in a while and cheap to boot. Notice without the drawback of poor presentation this stick could have easily been a perfect 10!

Very similar to my experience with Omars! :D

I love 'em, IMO they are one of the best bargains around today. Just can't bring myself to buy one of those huge boxes of them though!

Actually I'd be fine buy a box, at $3 a pop sixty of them cost about the same as 20 of most other sticks. My problem is I don't have storage for 60 of the damn things at the moment. I smell a box split coming tho......

Tried a bunch of these last time I was down in Myrtle Beach. Mine were pretty fresh, remember them being a bit harsh towards the end, but overall a good cigar for being so young. They look more imposing than they taste, I was surprised at the mellowness of them. I'd buy more, great for the golfcourse :ss:tu

Learn something new every day in the Jungle. I too have never heard of this marque and now I'm gonna have to go look for some. Damn you, Addiction!:)

No really, thanks for bringing these to my attention.

Good review... there is hope. I've been on a Nicaraguan & Honduran Puro kick and with these being a Nicaraguan Puro I picked up a 5er to sample. I had one a few days off of the truck and it left me wanting. I just didn't care for the blend. It felt to me that much more 'marrying' needed to happen. Has a stick just left you feeling like it 'could' have been so much better? That was how this one left me. That said I never pass judgment after just one stick or even multiple sticks if they have not been aged at least 6 months. I'm looking forward to trying them after they dry out a bit and have 6 months of age on them.

I did end up buying a whole box of these after all! Smoking a belicoso right now. These have become one of my favorite Nicaraguan puros. I think even some Habano-heads would like them.

Hmmm....that gives me an idea. :D

Actually in some of my other cigar pursuits I'd lost track of this one. It may be time to rediscover the magic.

Just reading through reviews - of cigars I have smoked - just to see how they compare to my experience.

This is most definitely a diamond in the rough - a big 14 carrot diamond.

If you like Nic puros, this is a must try.

Abso-freakin'-lutely incredible smoke for what it costs and looks like.

Smokin' a belicoso right now, got a box of them back in early December. Tasting great. I'm gonna love revisiting these at the 1 year mark. I think I will let them sleep until then.

Just found this thread, and thought I would respond. I bought one of these in the bellicoso vitola on the recommendation of the gentleman at the local B&M. I lit it up this afternoon, and I have to say I was blown away. It didn't look that great, but it smoked like a dream! I'm thinking that I may have to find these, and keep them on hand. Excellent cigar for the money.

Not sure appearance should effect the rating. Can you taste the appearance? does the appearance change the flavor?

Not to mention While these guys are not bad, but a near perfect 10? So you would put it up there with Padron Ann? With the high end Diamond crowns and fuentes?

your tastes are your tastes and if you do, cool, but I doubt it.
