I know there has been several reviews about this stick in this forum, hopefully you enjoy my rendition. This is a description of the cigar and I hope to add more to it.
"The Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 line is a medium bodied smoke. This blend of rare aged tobacco has the perfect balance of flavor, complexity, and richness. A very smooth earthy smoke with notes of cedar and a light espresso flavor. In pursuit of the finest tobacco"s the world has to offer, Rocky Patel uses this 12 year old Honduran Broadleaf wrapper along with a 5 year old filler and binder that will satisfy every smoker from novices to the most discriminating of aficionados."
After a 14 hour day today, I was looking for the non-dissapointing cigar to enjoy upon my return to the homestead. When I got home, my daughter and wife were sleeping, my son was down the shore at Nana and Papas house so what's a guy to do? Pour a bourbon, grab a Heiney and a RP vintage 90.
First, this thing is beautiful enveloped in a flawless broadleaf wrapper. The box press on it makes it feel heavy yet comfortable in the hand. Cigars to me utilize all of the senses and this one sure did.
I am smoking the Torpedo 6.1 X 52 vitola. It clipped well and has a eartly, chocolatey prelight smell and a free draw.
Toasted this sucker up and enjoyed a toasty, smooth and much more mild start into the first portion of this stick than i expected. Rose petal burn to start until the first inch was gone, then it started evening itself out.
The first third has hints of leather, earth and the up and coming cocoa that we RP Vintage 90 lovers rave about. I am on the deck, drink in hand and being thankful for all that is good.
First third ends with thick smoke, a firm white ash and the ever present semi sweet chocolate taste that comes to life shortly.
As I get further into it, the cocoa becomes prevalent with a toast undertone. i could describe it as mildy nutty, not peppery, just pleasant. It lays on the back of the tounge without creating a lump in the throat as many find uncomfortable. This is a lovely way to spend the evening.
Upon entering the final third, the toast and cocoa increase, sort of like eating a slighly burnt chocolate chip pancake (no syrup). There is a slight bitterness that I attribute to the age, I bought these a month ago, the ones I have in there from last year are my guinea pigs on the aging process of this stick. The construction is sound, no canoes, no veins, just a razor sharp burn. I could give this an 8.5-9 / 10
My fellow gorillas, if you haven't tried this one yet, you need to go to a Dr. and get a check up from the neck up. This is the cigar that has hooked many and although it might not be your absolute favorite stick, I doubt you will dissapoint yourself by indulging in one. In the meantime, enjoy and always be thankful for what we have going on here in the jungle. All my best to all of you.
Thank you.
Scott
