Cigar: Savinelli ELR #6 (robusto)
Overall smoking experience = A-
I’ve always heard a lot about the Savinelli ELR line. Smooth, tasty, good construction. All the attributes you’d expect to hear about a premium smoke. The only drawback was the price. They run about $12 – 14 a stick in Calif. with the tobacco tax. So when a friend offer me a #6 to try, I expectant and curious.
The wrapper is light tan, very smooth, and consistent throughout. The cigar appears to be well made if not very exciting to look at. The cap is finished off nicely. Maybe the biggest hint comes from a very high quality, nicely done, but conservative looking band. =B
The Savinelli feels firm to the touch, almost hard. I used a little more effort than ususal for the cut. The cut revealed very densly packed tobacco. I now knew that the firmness of the #6 wasn’t from being too dry, but from being really packed with tobacco. Would the cigar be plugged? No! The draw was perfect. =A
The #6 took longer than average to light, probably due to the density of the tobacco. Once lit, the burn was mostly even producing a firm light grey ash.
The ELR has a very rich Dominican tobacco aroma. Almost, but not quite sweet. Although the draw was easy, the cigar did not burn fast, and was not hard to keep lit either. The burn was mostly even. All the construction attributes met my expectations. The rate of burn, firmness, shape, and color of the ash (light grey) were all very good. =A-
This cigar was recommended to me as a good morning cigar. I thought I’d give it a good test and headed for the hot tub with a strong cup of coffee at 7 a.m. My first draw was very nice. Very smooth followed by a rich taste with an almost slight hint of sweetness. Not as sweet as say, a Baccarat or Licenciados, but just enough to invite another draw.
About half way through the smoke, the taste really started to open up and became fuller. Another surprise was that the ELR began to show some power. As I got down to the band, I was really enjoying the full flavor and strength of the cigar. Buzz factor=7. Wow! The aftertaste was minimal and not unpleasant. =A
I found the Savinelli ELR #6 to be a very satisfying cigar that went beyond my expectations for a “good morning cigar”. To me, the taste did change during the smoke, but not in a bad way. This smoke just got better and better.
Would I smoke another? You bet. What about the price? Well, the top 25 cigar vendors helped me out with that. The #6 can be purchased for $5-6/stick online! The chuchhill can be purchased for $6 – 7/stick! So I bought a box of robustos for $129/box of 25. Definitely a good value for a $5 cigar. I’ve had more expensive cigars that satisfy less. Overall smoking experience = A (not including the hot tub and coffee)
... A great smoke, at any price... rjs
