Spanish Cedar

So, now that I have a Vinotemp, I'm wanting to make some spanish cedar shelves and trays for it. Slight problem, NO ONE in Iowa seems to know what I'm talking about! I found one vendor that has spanish cedar; however, they only have it in two foot lengths with random (4" to 6" widths)...oh, yeah they want to try and charge 21 bucks, for these SCRAPS, each.

Long story short, I may have to end up talking to someone around here for their amazing woodwork. :D

PM Shilala Mtmouse or chasden They all do great stuff.

I'm probably going to end up doing that...I have no trader feedback at the moment though, I'm waiting on hearing from my request on the newbie trading sampler.

Anyone know if regular mahogany works as well? Since spanish cedar isn't actually cedar, it's in the mahogany family (thanks Wikipedia):D

You can use this link to try and locate Spanish cedar near you. WoodFinder, put Spanish cedar in the "Search by key word' box and enter your zip code. It will show you retailers around you that carry it.

If that doesn't work, I take P.P. so you don't need trader feedback.:tu

I get my Spanish Cedar from Goosebay.com. Prices are the best I could find, by far.
mtmouse makes gorgeous shelves and trays, Chuck has been making awesome slide-in drawers, and I've got a couple chest of drawers left.
Check out Goosebay. I think I bought the last of their Spanish Cedar, but they may have restocked. :tu

Both Woodcrafters and Rockler also carry Spanish Cedar.
Rockler is sick expensive. They have awesome pics of the stuff they carry, though. I always shop there and buy elsewhere. :tu
I'd kind of like to buy some of their stuff just to see if it stands up to other places. Their markup on identical items I've seen is about 300% and their prices on resawn lumber are around 500% over what I can get it for at Goose (and do the resawing myself).

Took me a minute to find the site. It's under goosebaylumber.com

If your just looking for plain Cedar trays or shelfs, give this man a serious look. His work is excellent and his prices are more than fair considering the cost of Cedar. The trays I make are finished.

There are a lot of good links in this thread if you still want to make your own, but price the wood and then get a quote from Mtmouse and make your decision :tu

Lot's of good advice here. Yes, you can use mahogany instead of Spanish Cedar, however, Honduran Mahogany except for timber that is coming illegally from the Amazon, is expense and rare due to over logging. African Mahogany is not the same thing.

Spanish Cedar (which grows fast and is still generally available, but relatively expensive) is fun to work with, but there is a lot of labor involved, I would seriously consider looking into buying what you need from some of the folks/woodworkers on this forum - from the photos of their finished work - WOW!

I recently bought some Sp Cedar for $5.15 bf, but I had to pick it up and the distributor was probably feeling generous that day. Note the sap on one of the board - can be problematic. While I hand picked it to avoid sap, I selected this one board in particular because of its figure... Rough Sp cedar as shown in this photo is less expensive, but you need a good planer and joiner to work it. Buying dimensioned Sp cedar from Woodcraft, etc. will cost you 2-5 times the price...

Would love to see photos of your finished project - Rick
