Vinotemp Drain

Been doing some searching on this subject, and didn't find any conclusive info. So I figured I'd start a new post for you post whores to deal directly with this specific issue. I have my new 28 bottle vinotemp, and am about 4 days from setup. I'm trying to figure out what to do about the drain. I know some of you remove it, some plug it up, others have a catch pan. I know all info will be hard to understand until I break that thing out and get in there and look around. I was hoping we could discuss all the possibilities and what you guys prefer and why. Thanks in advance for any info posted in this thread.

How you deal with the drain will depend largely on the ambient Rh in your area. Out west, the Rh is very low, so I get very little if any condensation. I have placed sheets or blocks of cedar on the bottom to absorb any moisture that may accumulate. In more humid climates you may find it necessary to devise some type of catch system. Search Vinotemps and you will find several solutions used by different brothers. :2
 
My experience and :2.

I thought I would remove the drain. Big mistake. I couldn't get it out and it is now a mangled piece of plastic that I fortunately was still able to get the wires for my fans through. I siliconed it on both sides to seal it. My vote would be leave it in as the hassle isn't worth it.

I'm in Florida, hot and humid as hell. I haven't had a drop of condensation and mine runs all the time. I don't need a catch pan. Now maybe my fans are drying the condensation, don't know and don't care.

Bottom line, I think everyone's situation is a little different, but if it were me I would run my wires through the drain, seal it, and see what happens from there. Take the easy route first.
 
I did not modify the drain in my vino and the Rh in it has been steady at 65 % and 70 degrees F. I do have 65% Shilala beads in it and over a hundred cigars in it. (in this image the door was open for a minute or two thats why the humidity is low)

You will be very happy with your purchase, it's comforting to know your cigars being stored properly.

I placed a piece of black electrical tape over it and put a 1/2 pound of beads in a mesh bag there. Any condensation that drips down will be absorbed by the beads.
 
I taped mine up as well and put 'The Puck' under it. I routed the water to drip into the puck filled with beads.
I also have Shilala's beads but it hasn't gotten to 65% yet. Stuck at around 60%. Just added an Oust fan...We'll see what happens.
Oh also, I have a Hydra in there that turns on a lot. So the Humidity is leaking somwhere.
 
I taped mine with black duct tape and rigged a flexible piece of plastic with a small bowl to catch the condensation.:tu
 
I have an EdgeStar which has its drip collection and exit hole near the top. I taped the hole shut and used a piece of plastic cut from one of those cheap freebie mousepads to create a narrow chute that funnels the drips to the bottom where I have a small dish of beads.
 
I have an older model 16 bottle Vinotemp with a pound and a quarter of Shilala beads. I taped my drain off with a small piece of strapping tape long ago and have no problems maintaining 64-67% RH very consistently. The top and bottom hygros register 64 and the middle one 67 which suits me just fine.
 
Taped mine with electrical tape as well ..Using Scotts beads Ambient temp rh here is about 70-80 deg and 70% RH Vino hold steady at 64-65%RH and not a drop of condensation with an internal temp of 65 deg.
 
Left mine unplugged. Rh is reading 65% with 60% beads but we have had enough rain in the last week to cause our humidity to spike way up. I anticipate the reading will eventually settle closer to 60%.
 
I left mine as is and haven't had any problems or condensation (I've had it a couple months now) here in southwest Virginia.

me too... its been like that for the last 6 years and mine is fine...
 
I just threw a bag of beads (65% RH, all my beads are that RH) and not had an issue yet. The house can get a little hot, and I can see a drip or two of condensation running down the back, but it will go right into the mesh bag of beads. Worked out well for me so far.

I taped mine over with Electrical tape.
I have 2 lbs of beads, and a fan on a timer to help circulate air.
Been rock solid @ 67 degrees and 65% humidity since I powered it on.

Did you put beads over the plug at all even? I'm just wondering what works best for you, because I'm also in Denver and just got a Vinotemp.

I'll probably tape it and out my beads there, TBH.
 
I just finished mine and it has been running for about a month. I created a water diverter that diverts water into a empty .22 shell plastic box. I empty it out about every two weeks when I need to spray down my beads. I also haver the hole plugged.

70F - 68% humidity
 
I removed mine by just pulling it out - it was tough though and a PITA (needle nose pliers and PULL hard). I have a catch pan to collect the drip. I have 2 Vinos right next to each other and one gets a few drops in the catch pan and one has been dry since day one. Weird, but works OK.
