Working from home

I work from home once a week (due to helping take care of dad) I must admit though...a laptop+VPN+stogie is a great thing!
 
I work from home every Friday. Right now I'm outside with my laptop, a DPG Vegas Cubanas, and a cup of Kona. Until noon I will do some paperwork, call some clients, login to a conference call, and smoke a few more cigars.
 
I don't understand why more companies don't offer the benefit of working at home. My company is hell bent against it. I sit in a cube for eight hours a day looking at excel spreadsheets (my job could be done from the house). If i could work from home i would not be looking for another job right now. :tu
 
Every Friday. I set up a little desk by assembling parts of my tailgate gear and fire up a few sticks before the kids get home from school.
 
I don't ever get to work from home, but my goal is that one day I will have a job that will allow me to work from home at lest one day a week.

I think the trend is in the favor of working from home at least 1 day a week. There are some old-fashioned companies that will resist it to the bitter end. My wife's company has gone so far as to start having shared office space so the company benefits as much as the employees. If the gas prices stay high most companies are going to either have to allow some work from home or go to the 4 day work week or be expected to pay more. I know of several women who have just quit their job because the commute got so expensive by the time they paid for daycare it just wasn't worth it anymore.

I agree. While my team has huge offices right in the heart of the financial district, none of us like driving downtown and wasting gas (i.e. $$$), contributing to pollution, contributing to gridlock, wasting hours a day driving that could be better spent on Club Stogie. While we are mandated to do certain work in the lab, everything else gets done in my messy home office. The dog and the humidor are right behind me!

I've been working from home for the last ten years or so. When I get tired of being home, I call and get a job. As soon as I get my back fixed I'm going to go build a powerhouse cause I'm bored out of my mind and I think I'd benefit from the frustration. :tu
I enjoy work if I can trick myself into thinking it's my idea. :)
My grand plan is to build birdhouses down in Key Largo. Just gotta wait till I get all these kids outta my pocket, and I'm down the road. :D
 
I work for one of the top 5 computer services firms in the country, and have been to the office once in the past 2 1/2 years. I like it, but it's not for everyone.

Some folks are not "self starters"... and need to be supervised. Others have the work ethic to "get it done". Some just don't trust themselves enough to work from home - worrying that they will get complacent.

There are benefits from both sides of the fence.

For me... I've only put about 5,000 miles on my car in the past 2 1/2 years and the $200/month I would spend for gas equates to a $2,400/year raise/bonus in my book.

For the company... it is very easy for me to work 10, 12, 14 hours per day -working from home. While I don't have to often, I do when I need to and it is much easier to do so - from home.

I spend a lot of time on conference calls so I am usually in my "smoking room" while I am on them. If I need to "work" - I can take my laptop into the smoking room and work away, while puffing away.

It's a win-win situation for me and the company.

Well this was my office wntill I changed companys.
 
Yeah, my company is pretty much virtual anyway so I work from home about when I'm not onsite with a customer (I do project management). I'm here about 60 to 70% of the time. I only need to go to the office 1 to 2 times per month just to make sure things are going right in my department, which is nice.

I occasionally will work on my laptop at the bar on my back porch and smoke, or on the phone especially during warm conference call days. As others have noted it's sometimes distracting or I find that I've let the 'gar go out (again) while focusing on work.

It does take getting into the right midset to work from home, and I often find myself working longer here than when I go to the office. Must...resist...checking..emails at...7:00 AM!!!
 
I work harder from home than most people do in their office. But I have also been doing it almost exclusively for 14 years. When the work day begins the house changes to an office. This room turns into my office. The pantry where all the servers are located turns into the server room. The kitchen turns into a break room. All of the comfortable areas of the house are considered lounges. I maintain a professional attitude and if you call me you will never know I am in a home or in an office. I start work by 8:30 every morning and stop around 6 ever evening. I usually take 2 15 minute breaks and a half hour for lunch.

Some of it might sound silly but it is a matter of keeping mentally disciplined.

The wife wont let me smoke in the house so Im reduced to sitting outside in the elements, better scenery out there anyway. The office is nothing special.
 
My office is nice enough but like you when I am doing something that doesn't require me to sit at a desk I will go for greener pastures. What is the point of working from home if you can't enjoy a few of the perks?

I have been doing it so long it is now an almost foreign concept for me to wear shoes.

I will admit that I count myself lucky enough to work from wherever I feel like it. One of the benefits of the office though is a little more dicipline - and the abnility to walk to someone's office and get in front of them if they are too slow in answering emails - and for long conference calls - especially ones I am not leading - I can go sit in the car and have a cigar!! :ss:ss
