View Full Version : Tired of uneven burn

Almost all my smokes smoke with an uneven burn, particularly "box pressed". due to that I have never been a big fan of "box pressed" vitolas.

I pretty much found out that it was mostly because of how I was keeping them. Once I have decided a cigar will soon be smoked I move it to my smaller 50 CT humidor which I keep at 50-60% Rh instead of all the other cigars I have stored at 70%. I have found this makes them all burn perfect even some cheapo dollar bundle cigars. (not that all bundles are bad but dollar cigar bundles aren't the best IMO)

Now to a few questions I have been smoking enough to "believe" my lighting technique is correct. I know there are many places I can check that will tell/show me how but should I be able to light any "well rolled" cigar that is kept at 70%. I use a torch and "toast" never touching the flame for about 60 sec until most is cherried then I take a couple puffs then check to make sure all is burning if not I puff it once more and still if not (most of the time it is) I will toast 10 more sec. If anyone sees something wrong there can you point it out or if I have developed to many problems, weather or not I need to change my technique.

One more thing, this is regarding "box pressed" vitolas is it a normal thing for them to burn uneven due to their shape? I have only smoked "box pressed" cigars that cost at least 3-4 dollars. (mostly more if I am going to try a boxed cigar in the hopes it will be perfect) I normally roll them back to a round shape as they warm up and it always corrects the draw. Is there something I'm missing on maybe a way to light them since rolling them back defeats the purpose (except as far as I know the original purpose was to just keep it from rolling off the table) so maybe I am not missing the purpose of it?

one small thing to ask that will probably get more input, what's a good mild to medium cigar (not super mild I like to taste a cigar but I'm not a fan of the strong nic buzz, I've only been smoking for a year and I like to have a good smoke with my coffee in the morning sometimes) that can be purchased online in the $60 range before shipping so like even 69.99 LoL is ok before shipping I just don't want to pay over $80 in total

Thank you for reading my post any input is welcome about your "box pressed" experiences or about your own lighting technique. I look forward to any Input so tell me anything you want, LoL.

THANK YOU

Try dropping your RH down into the mid or even low 60s. From my experience they burn better when stored between 62%-65% humidity. :ss

I am on my patio this morning with my coffee and my first Chateau Real cigar and as far as I am concerned this is just about the perfect morning smoke. Mild but with enough flavor to make it interesting.
About your burn issues I always make it a point to roll my cigar about 90 degrees after each puff It seems to help . Maybe its just my imagination? Also the side that seems to be burning slower , I make sure its at the bottom so that the smoke rising doesn't hinder the burn. Not sure where I read these tips a few years ago but they have worked great for me.

Definitely keep the slower burning side down. I even keep it at about 7 or 8 oclock as I usually hold the cigar in the left side of my mouth.

When lighting, I go ahead and puff while turning and lighting, usually taking about 30 seconds or so. I do check the foot to make sure it's well light and then either light a little longer, or enjoy a nice cigar.

A mild cigar that I find decent, the Empresario from Thompsoncigar.com. It's not expensive at all (like 25 cigars and a humi for 30 bucks or so). They're not premium, but they are a good smoke to enjoy.

Yes I do rotate the cigar as I smoke, I also must have read somewhere the same thing that proves true that the bottom burns faster because as the smoke rises it keeps the top from burning. As far as i know and it does help a bit but I am starting to think that humidity is the key and with box pressed maybe its the nature of the beast :r. I am just not a fan really I wonder how tri pressed burn I would think thoes would be nice, or the same thing, lol.

I like a good box-pressed smoke, as many cc's are box-pressed, and I very rarely have burn problems. I keep them stored between 60-65% rh.

I agree with the Chateau Real suggestion also you might want to try a Casa Torano, Helix, RyJ Reserva Real or a Monte Whire Label.
