What do y'all use this for?

I have 4 unfinished pipes, and I've heard that I should coat them with this. What do y'all think?

Generally carnuba wax is applied to pipes to give them a very hard, very shiny finish. In time, it will begin to fade as the pipe is smoked, but can be easily reapplied. Because carnuba is so hard, it must be applied with a "charged" buffing wheel... hope I helped

I use a product called Paragon. I wax all my pipes with this once the shine starts to fade.
I have a virgin briar that I keep waxed to protect it. Skin oils from your hand can also discolor your pipe, and this is the reason why I wax my virgin briar.....so that I don't prematurely darken areas that I am constantly in contact with.

Where would I get a charged buffing wheel?

I know what you mean from smoking unfinished pipes. I'm just hoping they dont begin to look like barn wood.

The buffing wheel is essentially just a cotton (or other very soft cloth) wheel that fits onto a hand-drill or similar rotary tool. In order to charge it, you have to actually use the wheel on a cake of carnuba, and then use the "charged" wheel on the pipe.

Generally speaking however, it is best to let a pipe shop buff your old pipes, as you're more likely to get a better finish than if you were to do it yourself. If you're deadset on doing it yourself though, http://pimopipecraft.com/tools.html has buffing wheels and carnuba wax. I've ordered from them, and was very please with the service.

there's a feature that most forum software comes with, and i know i'm going to sound like a dick, but it's called "Search".

there are a few "forms" of search. there's the big ol' "search" button, then there's "searching this forum", and then there's "searching within a thread".

since we're in the pipe forum, lets just use the "search this forum" option.
http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/1061/generalpipeforumsearchxs7.gif

when you click that link, it drops down and you can put in your words you want to search for. Carnuba is what i searched for, as "wax" is only 3 letters and it won't search for anything smaller than 4.
http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/4229/carnubawaxti9.gif

you would then get 18 results, including your brand new topic on the subject. i have pointed to a couple that may be of some assistance to you.
http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/8214/resultsbd5.gif

the search feature comes in very handy if you have LOTS of questions that probably have already been asked before and don't feel the need to start yet another topic on that same subject.
it also takes a sh*tload less time than to make another topic and wait for the same people who have answered it the other 17 times to reply yet again.
the added bonus is that you may end up reading something by someone with a lot of experience and learning even more than you bargained for.

hope some of those other topics help.

I think of Greg more as a "popped" kinda guy. I agree though. Half of the posts for the last week have had multiple threads started about them. I also highly agree that if an old thread is bumped, a person might read some awesome posts by extremely knmowledgeable gorrilas.

Got it. I shall search rather than post from now on. I figured new posts encouraged discussion, but I will follow your advice from now on.

Not harping, just trying to clear up. A new post might spark discussion, but there are many members who dont post very often. When they do, it should be taken as "gospel". I would hate to lose these things to newer posts. Many dont even post any more, but what they contributed when they did is great info for pipers new and old. Plus it is fun to go bak and see how opinions differ or have chenged over the months/years.

time difference is screwing me up with reply time.

first - there's no venom in my post, i was simply pointing out that a search would've netted a lot of helpful results.
secondly - had i NOT BEEN HELPFUL, i would've just been a dick and said, "use the search".
lastly - IF YOU LOOK AT THE PHOTOS, IT SHOWS ALL KINDS OF INFORMATION, so i'm being helpful by pointing out all the other topics that result from doing a quick search, pointing him in the right direction for his answers.

no need to stop post, just stop posting 5 new topics every day about stuff that's already been discussed.
enthusiasm is great, we love discussion....

Nobody is telling you not to post - but rather that the search tool can be your friend. New posts with new topics do encourage discussion - new posts on the same topics that have recently been posted, not so much. Therefore the far better approach would have been to bump up an old/recent topic and then ask your question there.

This puts all the old information right up front and any new information can be added - keeping everything in one tidy spot so the next guy that does a search doesn't have to read through posts such as this one.

One last angle for you to consider is this. Let's say that poster "Iknoweverythingaboutpipes" once made a brilliant post on how to wax your pipe. Sadly he no longer posts. You didn't search, he is not here to answer your question - now you'll never know his words of wisdom.

Not meaning to harp on what is already said - but I typed this before a meeting and didn't get to send it until now.

Perhaps my post was not clear. No problem; I will use the knowledge left to me by the tobacco elders--a lurking I shall go. Didn't need an account to search though.

I also need no further direction. Thanks.

Yeah dude, but if you didn't have an account then we wouldn't be trading kick ass tabaks.

Anyway, all praise to the elders!

That was my purpose for participating. Not that big a deal. Did enjoy getting to know and trade with a couple of y'all.

By the way, I've searched and can't find any instructions on closing an account. Any takers?

sorry if you took what i said the wrong way. me being blunt can come off as being a dick to some ppl. i'm out of town on business, don't have much time to expand and be too longwinded and use flowery words. my "wordsmithery" tends to be direct/to the point during these times. if you've heard me talk or met me, you'd know how to read what i type (which is not hateful).

I'm sorry if you've taken what i've said the wrong way. my first post was meant to be helpful - the photos came out too damn big and may come across the wrong way.

my 2nd post in this topic (#15) was not aimed at you, but at the other ppl who also may have thought i was being harsh. the caps were meant to stress what i was saying, not "internet yelling", i simply didn't have time for the "italics".

again, we love enthusiasm and to discuss all kinds of pipe related crap. my only message, while giving you some direction to find your solution, was that you can use the search feature for some of the things you've asked about here recently.

hope you stick around, would hate to think that the way i came off is the reason we would lose a productive member of our board.

Don't take anything personally. Truth is: I'm not having fun on this board. I only fit in with a select few members. I would like to have my account closed as I really do not want my handle associated with this board.

It's that Imhotep picture, Greg.

BBS forum has a funny way of (not) expressing the posters real intent. Having met Greg in person*, I know that he meant well and was only trying to help with that post. (Love the ghetto photoshop work :)).

Anyone who orders spring salad mix, remove's all vegetables except iceberg lettuce, slices the lettuce leaf in bite sizes, can't be all that bad.

It sure seemed you were having fun until ya got yer panties on a bind about the mistaken impression someone was scolding you. I don't like everybody at CS either, and they all sure dun like me, but we can coexist...unless of course you take yer ball and go home cause an elder tried to point you in the right direction...but to each his own

understood, i'll let the admin know.
sorry you feel that way.
there's only a select few that i "fit in" with as well (they know who they are), and they don't post very much anymore due to a lot of the newer members having some sense of entitlement just by gracing us with their presence on a public forum. the sense that they need not do any legwork and should be given freebies for being a jovial post-whore (not aimed at you - issues we've been having long before you showed up).

Mac,
My panties are none of your business, but if you must discuss them, proceed, sir.

IHT,
I will no longer be gracing anyone with my presence.

Whoever was bitching about freebies,
Ask Mad Hatter whether I gave or received more on the forum. I am ordering at the end of this week from providing samples. But run your mouth off as much as you want. I wont be here to deal with your attitude; good luck to you though as people with that kind of attitude normally have something wrong with them. No amount of bitching or butting in where your comments are not necessary will fill that hole in your soul.

In case you cannot read between the lines, I no longer wish to have anything to do with this board. Now, by all means, discuss. For, it is this great discussion that lead to my decision.

texasoutlaw, just to be clear, in case you lurk and read this reply, nowhere did i state that you were looking for freebies. if you notice, i put in parenthesis that it was before you showed up, which means, not you.

oh, and the admin has been told that you want your account deleted. he may be busy on a business trip right now (or on vacation), so it may take a few days.
