I like a coach who will stand up for his players and take the heat. My kid can play for him anytime... :ss

Being a OU fan I have a deep rooted hatred for all things OSU but I have to give credit where credit is due. My respect for this man has grown 100 fold for standing up for one of his kids.
As much as I dislike OSU I have to say good job Coach Gundy...:tu

More people of all walks of life need to jump on the various media outlets like this when they are out of line. Way to go Coach Gundy!

Now I'd like to know what it was all about.

The reporter, who is female, apparently made references inferring that the player, a benched QB, was a mama's boy, too scared to play, basically took shots at this kids' desire to play the game. She was on GMA this morning.

Yeah, I'm sure she was on there defending her story. It pisses me off that once again 99 percent of the media is jumping to her defense instead of criticizing bad journalism.
Yeah. Maybe the coach was wrong for venting in that forum, but he does have freedom of speech. It seems as the media only wants themselves to have the freedom to criticize others and don't want anyone pointing the finger back at them.

I think that Gundy is right on. I don't know OSU athletics very well or OK newspapers in general for that matter, but I sure know crappy sports scribblers. Alabama is chock full of them (we might have two worthwhile sportswriters in the entire state, seriously, two max).
I suspect some wanna-be sensationalist decided to stir up some controversy and puff up her rep among her pals and the coach evidently had enough of it. Good for Gundy.
I think the problem with newspapers is that they are fighting a relevance battle in terms of readership and talent. They are now competing with twenty-four hour sports and news channels, sports-talk radio often on a twenty-four hour basis, multiple Internet sites that specifically cater to almost every possible sports and team. As well, coaches are increasingly media savvy, and are far more likely to regulate information flow in their programs, which tends to feed the same info to all outlets. The refuge they should be seeking is broad-based, high quality, in-depth analysis, but instead a lot of them seem to think the best course is to ape the sensationalists. So they continue to circle around the bowl and fail to distinguish themselves from the new guys on the block.

Living in Oklahoma it is pretty cool to see how many people are actually backing our coach. Some of the personality on ESPN are even giving him props. Even our instate rival Coach Stoops (Sooner) is backing what he said.
GO POKES!!!

Greatest recruiting ploy ever. Makes it even better cause Gundy believes it. Makes every parent feel that he will stand up for their kid and that OSU would be a great place for their son to go. Finally a stand up school in Oklahoma.:tu

And I suspect you are right. I worked in Public Affairs/Information for 20 years and spent another 10 years as a magazine editor. I know who some very bright old-timers in the media who were predicting that daily newspapers were all going the way more irrelevant sensationalism because of electronic (radio & tv) coverage - and that was before the internet got big. They are all retired now.

I like it when a coach says put it on me and pick on me. More of less I get paid to make decisions and this kid just plays pick on me. I would send my kid to his program any day.:tu

I find it quite funny that 10 or so days before, she writes in a blog (see link on article) that she is one of Bobby Reid's fans, noted she said last year he was another Vince Young. Wonder what happened in those 10 days, maybe he got the last piece of chicken and she was jealous.

This woman is the epitome of every other sports reporter that has never played sports. She has never had to deal with the nervousness, pressure and time and dedication this athlete puts in. And he doesn't get paid. She, however, gets paid to thrash an upstanding student-athlete while sitting at a desk publishing what seems to be fiction. I read the article and it was terrible journalism. No real sources, just "rumors and rumblings" and those are the words she used! I agree with Gundy, it makes me want to puke!
Disclaimer: I am in no way an OSU fan. Go Mizzou! Ranked# 20 baby!

Thanks. I read the article. Now for some comments from a semi-retired journalist.
One of my mentors was Dr. Doug Starr who was Dean of Journalism at Texas A&M for a long time. He was also a Coast Guard reservist and we would sit around talking about journalism and where it was going. Some of his comments (though I don't know if he originated them)were:
1. Why report the facts when you can create your own.
2. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.
3. Sensationlism sells newspapers.
4. Building your reputation by destroying others gets you promoted.
Of course, these were examples of what good journalism don't do. The reported apparently decided they were rules to follow.

I'm impressed that he actually spoke some words that others don't have the balls to say themselves. Props to him. I think the media is a little shocked that he delved into the ethical realm of reporting, haha.
I like that he noted that they are college kids. They're students/ameteurs, not Pros.

A good tirade every now and again is quite entertaining. Good to see a real human being just get fed up with something and vent. Shows the fellers he's one of them and lets it be known that his press conferences won't always be boring. I know how he feels, I get pissed sometimes and I just explode. Ask Anita, Have to commend Coach Gundy because my language isn't near that nice. Sometimes thats what it takes to drive home a point.

I saw one of those clowns from ESPN saying he was an idiot. Personally I'm glad to see a coach have that much passion. And I couldn't even BEGIN to think someone in the media was an idiot.
