While shopping at a Wine Shop at the 'Historic City Market' I ran across a small in-store standup humidor stocked with about 10 different boxes/types of cigars. They had brands like Bullet and Helix, Arturo fuente Curly Heads (I purchased one of these but when I later inspected it I noticed the wrapper had some greenish discoloring, possibly from mold, and the cigar was extremely soft. I didn't think much of this because I've yet to have a bad experience with these but this one was very inferior compared to the rest) and Romeo Y Julieta. They had a few more brands and nearly all they offered where small - medium sized cigars.
I've put off buying an Onyx for about 6 months as I prefer to smoke these only on occasion, so I decided to go ahead and purchased one. The size wasn't noted but I believe its likely a NO. 4 (5''x44). The cigar is very firm and after a guillotine cut is still rather hard to draw on. The initial taste was fantastic and was smooth on the tounge and easy on the nose. Sweetened dark Cocoa powder was the first taste that I noted. As I blew smoke out through my nose a lighter creamier aroma was detected along with some woody notes. I would deffinately consider this cigar to be medium bodied with a predominate dark side. 1/4th way through this gem I am still tasting Cocoa now along with some nice toasty flavors.
One complaint I have regarding this smoke is that it burns rather hot. I decreased the frequency of puffs to try and remedy this but it didn't help too much. The heat resonated nearly 1/2 way down the smoke which made band removal very easy. Once the cigar was 1/2 way through the heat was only about 1/2-1/4th an inch from my lips but it still tasted as smooth as ever. This cigar is treating me very well because I've been a bit sick lately with an extremely sore throat which would normally make it impossible to enjoy a smoke, but the Onyx is not irritating my throat at all.
By smoking these only on occasion, I believe that it very much increases my appreciation for this line. I generally always prefer a Maduro and this is one that has some very interesting characteristics. Complete with Dom. Republic, Peruvian, and Nicaraguan filler, Nicaraguan Binder and a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper this cigar packs in A LOT of flavor and depth. I generally like to cleanse my palate before I engage in an early morning smoke and brushing my teeth is not an option so I ate an apple and took a few swigs of spring water prior to indulging. Lasting about 45 minutes, burning very evenly and have much consistency throughout the whole smoke, this cigar is a champ. in my book. Now its time to rewrite this review in my cigar notebook (stogumentary). Thank you for your time.
