During my most recent trip to the smoke shop I had decided that I was after a few new smokes. I usually don't swing this way but after carefully examining it the Partagas Cifuentes stood out to me. I normally wouldn't purchase a cigar like this, for some reason i've always grouped up Punch, Partagas, Hoyo, SLR, and AF as generic, pricey cigars but lately I've been exploring these much more and have been falling deeply in love with some of these. The Arturo Fuente Curly Head (Maduro) happens to be my absolute favorite right now, not only is it extremely affordable (Around $2.00) but it is also an extremely good smoke!
The Cifuentes hard a very dark and oily wrapper. The prelight smell was subtle but complex. From foot to head, the aroma progressed from Toast(foot) to wood (Mid) to the head that possesses what I call 'That Dirty Horse Smell' which is what I believe CA refers as "Leather". The oily wrapper leaf edge spiraled down the length of this slightly rough, bumpy and veiny cigar. My experience with these cigars is very limited. I have only smoked a couple Partagas in my life and most were at the beginning of my smoking career, which resulted in a slight prejudice based on their full bodied assult on my virgin palate.
Being slightly more experienced in full bodied smokes (Although, truthfull I vomited after smoking my first and only Fuente Fuente OpusX :pu ) , I believe that I am now more qualified for such a smoke. I am chosing to smoke this early in the morning, about 10 minutes after drinking a glass of Ice Water to cleanse any antagonistic nasties that may possibly be lingering from last nights slight overindulgence of ethanol and intercourse. :al
I only had access to a bic lighter and I surely didn't want to taint my first real experience with the Cifuentes with the impure, unnatural, brutaly assulting fumes of a lighter so I sought out to find a pack of matches and my guillotine cutter to fire up the foot of this mysterious nubian gem. After the first flare up of this smooth drawing stick my fear of the unknown slightly deminished as I was greeted with pleasant flavors. I had trouble identifying this but soon the notion of a premium cut of steak or pork with a slight salty note came to mind. Unknowing if this was an accurate perception I had my wife take a short draw to see what conclusion she could come to. She notes that the after taste of the cigar is very similiar to the after taste that she gets from drinking coffee and agreed that it does resembling the herbal/spicey lowry seasoning type flavor of a good steak dinner.
A glass of port would very likely go well with this smoke, which is likely better suited as an 'After Dinner' cigar. I generally don't do this but in order to cool down my throat and mouth I had to grab a mountain dew to accompany this smoke. I'm starting to think this is more of a medium bodied cigar than the full bodied nature that I originally expected. There is a bit of a throat bite and the leather dirty horse flavor is becoming far more predominant, which is a characteristic that I absolutely do NOT like in a cigar. There are many cheap cigars that taste nearly identical to this. I am already a bit dissapointed in it but I still have about 5 more inches to go.
This is not a cigar that I am wanting to sit around and enjoy so I'm going to have to take off :z , head out to the smoke shop and pick out some smokes for my dreaded family reunion today. I'll report back and let you know how the cigar progresses and finishes and if my opinion changes at all. I purchased this cigar sort of as an experiment and if its bad I may just learn my lesson, but maybe my tastes have changed a bit since then.. we shall see.
