Hi there... Wow, I can't believe there is an internet forum on pipes and pipe smoking. Very cool!
I am a returning pipe smoker. I ended up switching to cigarettes, then quit smoking all together for decades.
A few months ago, I smoked a cigar with my brother-in-law and enjoyed it. Then the next thing I know, I got out my old Dr. Grabow, picked up some common Capt Black (white) and got back into pipe smoking.
I forgot how enjoyable pipe smoking really is after all this time. After seeing how much cigarettes cost these days, I will NEVER smoke them again.
I have since upgraded my pipes and choice of tobacco. The old worn out Dr. Grabow is banished to one of the kitchen cupboards, and will be only used as an emergency backup.
I have a nice Eriksen rough textured straight pipe, and an ever nicer, Sasieni 4-dot ruff root #2. I alternate bowls between the two pipes.
For tobacco, I found a great tobacconist in town with a dozen or so bins of bulk tobacco. I tried some of this, some of that, and eventually settled on Buttered Rum tobacco.
With only two pipes (not counting the old worn out Dr. Grabow backup) to choose from, should I look at getting another one?
I look forward to hearing from you guys and reading more on this forum!

Welcome Butch. Common thought says you should have a rotation of pipes allowing you to give each pipe a day or two of rest after smoking. Some guys smoke each pipe only once between rests, other guys smoke one pipe the whole day. Lots of things here depend on your own personal preferences. Again, welcome to CS

Welcome to Club Stogie & the pipe forum, brother !!
How many pipes you need will depend on a lot of things ... like, how much you smoke ... what blends you smoke in them ... and how compulsive/obsessive you are about aquiring them.
(that last one gets me all the time)
So .... considering it's said to let a pipe rest ... some say 48 hours - some say a week ... before smoking in it again, to give the wood a chance to fully dry out, a rotation of pipes might be needed, depending on how many bowls you smoke in a day/week.
You may also want to dedicate a pipe to a particular tobacco or tobacco blend, so that you don't get "ghosting" of flavors showing up in your smoke. (so your straight golden Virginia doesn't give you hints of latakia, that you would find in an English blend)
And you may just be sick :D & begin buying briars like a woman buying shoes. I fall into this catagory.
Anyhoo .. again, welcome.

I'd say a fella should have at LEAST 31 pipes - one for each day of the month! :D

I'm working on that apparently; I've only been into pipes for about 3 months now and have a total of 7 (i think). You'll definitely get the feel for about how many you need after a little while of getting back into the hobby. And if you stick around this crowd, you'll be spending every dollar you make on pipes/baccy. Enjoy the slope!

Welcome to the CS pipe forum Butch! As others have mentioned, it'd be a good idea to pick up a couple of pipes to dedicate to certain styles of tobacco. You could pick up a handfull of cobs, that would certainly work. We have a member here named frenchy, check out his website. He has some great deals on nestate and new pipes that you can pick up for pretty cheap!

Thanks guys... I know a guy who has something like 15 or 16 different pipes. Eveything from simple Corn Cobs, to Briar, Meershaum, and even custom made, decorative pipes.
...and here I am with only 2 pipes.
Edit: Here are my two pipes that I have (so far):
Eriksen sand blasted straight pipe

I have 3 cobs, a minicob, cherry ozark, 3 briars - a stanwell, a GBD, a savanelli....
Next up - carving my own.
All this in about 5 weeks.
Enjoy the slope and beware of the impending ebay pipe addiction.
Oh, and if you like buttered rum get some Trout Stream - has a very mild butterscotch smell and flavor. can buy this at pipesandcigars.com
Also, check out tobaccoreviews.com - it has reviews..... about tobacco.

Welcome, Butch! I'm just getting started as well, and also have some of the same questions that you posted. I have two cheapies that I've been using, and wasn't sure what, or how many others I should pick up (for using while I figure out what I like). This is a great forum with a lot of friendly and knowledgeable people who are always willing to help. The FAQs and Links threads are still cracking me up! Just a slew of information!!!:tu
