Can someone please tell what exactly this is, and what causes it?

ill assume you mean the nast goo at the bottom of a bowl when smoking. Combustion creates water as a by product, so the water mixes with ash, and badabing, tobacco juice.

And if you are drinking it, well, it's the same as what Nut says. Just that when enough accumulates your stem will act as a straw.

Usually something to avoid

Well I do clean it out after every smoke with a pipe cleaner, so I don't have a bad probably with it. Ironically though, the thing that made me ask was me getting some in my mouth a couple days ago. I think of it was because I was hold the pipe stem down for one reason or another for a lot of the bowl.

This can also be caused by the tobacco, especially if it a goopy aromatic. It may also be caused by 'smoking wet' You might try a loser packing tenique on the tobacco, as a too tightly packed bowl will force more aggressive puffing which in turn will cause more heat resulting in the steamng affect.

Hey Infin1ty - gave kind of a quick answer earlier.

As was stated the juice is a result of low-heat combustion in a relatively closed environment (the bowl). Similar to the condensation from your car's tailpipe. It's a fact of pipe-life but the phenomenon can be mitigated quite a bit. (ok, "big-word" mode OFF)

Things that will cause excess moisture are the moisture content of the tobac in the first place and this can be made worse by burning the tobac hotter/faster. The two conditions go hand-in-hand. So dryer tobac and smoking slower can greatly reduce the juice as well as the resulting gurgle and the dread slurp.

Aside from that, two other things can keep you from drinking nicotine.
One popular remedy is to keep a pipe cleaner handy and when you start to feel/hear a gurgle building up just insert the cleaner into the stem and down towards the bowl, where it will act like a sponge. Personally I don't do this, got put off by the first time some ash/leaf got pulled up the stem waiting for me to take my next puff.
The other help is to occasionally purge, or gently blow into, the pipe. This seems to keep any molisture down in the bowl and seems to have the effect of blowing some vapor back thru the tobac to be dispersed back out the bowl. Ths is my method and if the tobac is not too wet, and you're sipping slowly enough I have found that it works well.
