Only in Louisiana...

In LSU country, football trumps trial date
By MICHAEL KUNZELMAN, Associated Press Writer
December 21, 2007
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Justice can wait until after the LSU game.

A state judge near the home of the Tigers has agreed to postpone a trial scheduled to start on the same day LSU plays Ohio State in the BCS national championship game.

Stephen Babcock, an attorney defending Imperial Casualty Insurance Co. in a lawsuit over a car crash, requested the delay because he has tickets to the Jan. 7 game at the Superdome in New Orleans. He and other LSU fans have rented out the second floor of a Bourbon Street bar for a pre-game tailgate party.

In his written request for a new trial date, Babcock refers to Ohio State as "Slowhio" ("due to their perceived lack of speed on both sides of the ball") and notes that Allstate, sponsors of the Sugar Bowl, are not a party in the insurance case.

"All counsel to this matter unequivocally agree that the presence of LSU in the aforementioned contest of pigskin skill unquestionably constitutes good grounds therefor," Babcock wrote. "In fact we have been unable through much imagination and hypothetical scenarios to think of a better reason."

Babcock, whose law office is in Baton Rouge, said lawyers for the plaintiff in the case also have tickets to the game.

"We might disagree on the merits of the case, but everyone was in agreement on this, for sure," he said during an interview Friday.

That includes West Baton Rouge Parish District Judge Alvin Batiste, who agreed Thursday to postpone the trial but didn't immediately set a new date. Babcock said he doesn't know if Batiste is an LSU fan, "but most people around here are."

Louisiana already has a legal precedent for football trumping a trial date. In January, a judge agreed to postpone a trial due to a conflict with last season's NFC championship game between the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears.

Didn't Congress shutdown last year during the national championship game? I think it should be a federal holiday :D

If this is serious, I sure get a kick out of the "Slowhio" comment. What balls he must have haha. Would have been even funnier if the Judge was a Buckeye Alumnist.

We do the same kind of stuff for the Michigan game.

I love that people think we are slow.

Your right, the last time ya'll were the "slow" you guys got whooped 42-14 by a "faster" Florida team.

Just remember...Ohio St is 0-8 in bowl games against SEC teams.

So, really, "Ohio St bleauxs"

Or, as I heard and thought was funny, Buck the F**keyes

Back for more? I think I've been around for awhile now...longer than you it seems and I'm not playing games either, just delivering cold, hard facts.

Your right, things don't change when we're rivals in the biggest college game of the season. It's called trash talk and if you can't hang then just sit on the porch with some chocolate covered buckeyes.

0-8 will soon turn to 0-9.

0-8 will soon turn to 0-9."Back" as in...back with this kind of dialogue. I never said the bucks would win the game, bro. I was simply observing that the buckeyes seem to do better in an underdog role. So given the choice, I would always rather see them in a big game as the underdog.

As to trash talking, I can more than hang. I simply choose not to participate. And as to facts, your facts refer to past games and past teams.

Maybe you should let the teams play the game. SEC is my favorite conference, but......

And as to facts, your facts refer to past games and past teams.

Exactly...last years (and prior years) games don't mean a thing. It's all about what happens in January 2008. ;)

Facts? Ok...the facts are shown in the strength of schedules, I won't even post them to show my point, I'm sure you know.

More facts? Both your starter cornerback and his backup are suspended.

And even more...we are playing a home game.

We beat Tennessee, who beat Georgia, with a bunch of our second string and a amateur quarterback. I'm not saying we're going to win, I just like our odds.

I love my tigers just as much as the next guy, but we shouldn't get too cocky. I believe we have a tough game on our hands here. Ohio state is a good team. That being said, Geaux Tigers and I hope we can focus on playing a good game, not a lucky one.

And in case it hasn't been said already (and I know this is off-topic): Tebow shouldn't have won the heisman. I cannot stand the guy.

Yeah, I guess one game and not a season should decide the Heisman.

Tebow's shoulder was shot that game, most QBs wouldn't even have suited up...which speaks volumes for Tebow's character.

Gee, by that logic, I guess Arkansas should be in the National Championship Game instead of LSU since McFadden tore them apart for one game. :2 :r

I for one thinks Tebow did deserve the Heisman. McFadden had maybe two great games. If it wasn't for Tebow, I'm sure Florida would have had more than 3 loses.

As for we lucked into the Championship????? Please name a zero or one loss team that you think could match up with LSU on the FIELD, not on paper.

I'd like to throw in one more fact: Ohio St's top ranked opponent this year is still 4 spots lower than LSU lowest ranked opponent. I for one don't think it will be a good game, I think it will be a great game.

EXACTLY!!!

LSU needed not one but TWO teams to lose in the last week of the season...and then needed even more help from the voters to get into the championship game. Instead of bashing the Buckeyes, you should be thanking Pitt and Oklahoma!

The team we lost to is another team playing in a BCS bowl. If I remember correctly, both teams LSU lost to were unranked.

But I bow to the Holiness that is LSU football. You know, they are undefeated in regulation and all. :r

I'll be the first to admit if we lose it'll suck, and suck big time. But if we win, oh how sweet the victory will be.

LSU didn't create the BCS or the system used for deciding who's #1 or #2.

Sorry about that. I wasn't wild about him taunting the fans during the game. He was a good candidate for it, but Mcfadden should have gotten it.

Tebow underestimated the fans and how Baton Rouge is a bit of a "Holy land" of sorts when it comes to LSU football. Don't mess with the fans, some of them are a bit crazy, lol.

That being said, I just read about how LSU fans got his cell number and posted it everywhere (because he taunted the crowd with a "call me" sign according to one site I saw it on) and that went a bit too far.

Even though I am glad to see my tigers in the BCS, I think the whole damn thing is a bunch of confusing crap. IN fact, the entire college football season has been kind of a confusing mix. No one really stayed #1 for any long periods of time. SO yeah, the BCS is going to be an interesting game. And LSU will win it, if it doesn't get too cocky.

Geaux Tigers!
