Introduction
I received this smoke at CigarFest 2005 in Bethlehem Pennsylvania this spring. Bucanero had a booth there where they were giving out either a Salsa or a Don Douglas. I had previously had a Salsa so I thought I would try something new, a mistake which you will read about shortly. This cigar, in the company’s words, “…is a tribute cigar, honoring one of the top master blenders of our time.”
Pre-Light Inspection
The Don Douglas Cabinet Series Robusto measures (5 x 50). The cigar is comprised of Ecuadorian, Honduran, and Dominican tobacco. It is a mild bodied smoke. The wrapper was a smooth medium hued golden brown. It was fairly well constructed with a good cap and springy touch.
Smoking Experience
Not much effort to get a good burn going. The draw was just a bit too tight. The first two inches offered only a very thin taste. The aroma of the smoke was pleasing, but the stick was very stingy with the amount smoke produced. Beyond the first two inches offered only a miniscule increase in flavor and smoke. I picked up the slightest hint of creaminess which was good, but not enough to save this experience. This stogie only got burned to within two inches. It wasn’t good enough to warrant my time.
Final Thoughts
I’m not sure how much this stick costs. Anything above $1.50 is too much. The master blender Bucanero is trying to pay tribute to is not going to be impressed with the Don Douglas Cabinet Series. It is simply an unremarkable cigar, end of story.
