View Full Version : Why so many?

I realize this will be a real subjective question, but if a few of you don't mind answering I'd appreciate it.

I have a 50 ct humi and could see maybe as much as 200 - 250 in order to buy a few boxes in bulk. Many of the members here have posted they have thousands in storage. Why so many? No way to smoke/give out that many? My budget and the fact I tend to buy and smoke versus store may be influencing my storage concept. Some going wrong with one of the larger humi's and losing that many sticks would worry me a bit. Thanks.

I'm with the Counselor. With multiple boxes rather than singles, it is easier to share the cigars that are smoking well with friends as well.

As far as something going wrong, if the active humidification device on my humidor went bad, I would have Bob Staebell overnight me a new one. The cigars will be fine for a couple days.

For me, It's the result of trying to ensure that I had a variety of stuff to try. My local B&M guy's first piece of advice to me was to try everything or I won't know what I like. I took that to heart. I have a 300ct., a 200ct and a 120qt coolerdor and still need a little more space.

I know I will never smoke them all. At one point I figured I needed to smoke 3 cigars a day, every day for a year to get through them all, but I know i will always have a choice and will always have some to share.

besides, I'm addicted to the devil site.:ss

I love having a selection to choose from. I never want to hold off smoking a cigar just because I have one. Having many of a certain stick allows you to smoke them as they age. For me its also love of collecting.

I also give out TONS of cigars. More per week than I smoke. Over winter break I gave away about 30 in total. I love making others happy with my obsession :)

Thats my excuse, what's yours?!

The same reason people collect wines and pipe smokers collect pipes and other things. It's a hobby that many of us have a true passion for. Like croatan said, choices and aging are a major, major part of it.

NCRadioman could not have said it better. It's a hobby, now if someone were buying a ton of cigarettes and stockpiling for later consumption than I could ask "Why?" For myself it's fun to not only smoke my cigars but collect them. It's actually this part of it that my wife realized not too long ago and has been a big part of the reason why she does not break my chops as much. It could also be the fact that I don't frequent C-Bid as much as I used to:r

It is cheaper than buying cars?

Seriously - I always thought the same thing, but am finding that there are some that I like, and some I wqant to have....and a bunch to give away. which means I need more than my humidified locker at the B&M, and my Humi at home (Now there are 2 of those).

As for aging the cigars...I smoke 'em too fast!:ss

Collecting, aging and selection are sane reasons. Nothing, and I mean nothing, excites, pleases, satisfies me more than opening my humi's or cooler and smelling that first whiff of cedar and cigars. Then comes the joy of taking out trays of beautifully banded cigars and just staring at them. Fussing over arrangement, protection, environment and condition is part of the pleasure for me. Its looking at coffins, tins, boxes, treasured cigars and memories. Its hearing about new accessories like HERF tubes that papajohn67 gifted me and then getting some because I have to have them and cannot wait to gift to others and hope it excites them like it did me. Its having two types of blank bands and many different shipping bags, boxes...and lighters, cutters, and... Jesus, I'm a sick man. :D

Thanks for the reply guys. Sounds like a lot of passion here. I guess as I noted I'm still a smoker not a collector. I do see maybe another 200 - 250 ct might be handy for both a little bulk, variety and aging. I do tend to smoke them within a month or two of the ones I do buy.

give it time, brother, give it time...:D

I have unfortunately also slid down the pipe slope with as much excitment as cigars. 30 pipes, 7 or 8 tins, 2 pipe racks a new lighter and...aw hell, i give up!

You'll find that as you gain more experience, you'll want to share it with others.

Why collect stamps? or baseball cards. With cigars; it personal. The time you spend with your friends smoking is just a joy and the time you spend with your cigars alone. Smoking or fondling(just kidding ..a little), it's total enjoyment and relaxation.
Ok, the why so many question. It's they way we all would be with everything , if we could get away with it. If it gives us pleasure, we want it all. The sad story of man. We can never have it, but we want it. If you don't want all the cigars. It's because you want something else more. More women, more money whatever. Hey, my wife lets me have cigars, I'm lucky. :tu

I don't collect, but I 100% understand the time spent with friends. I live for the time spent with my Brothers on the scoots. Good times and bad, wouldn't trade it for the world. Luclily my wife supports me in both endevors.

That's the simple and absolute truth!

As far as the accumulating part goes, I think it's healthier (and a lot easier) to simply embrace the sickness. Denial seems to be pretty much futile for a good number of us.

It's similar to wine collecting... If you just have only one bottle of a particular wine, you're hesitant to drink it unless it's a special occassion. With a full case of wine, you look for or even make up special occasions just for an opportunity to enjoy the wine... With a full cellar of wines, you can pick and choose what you feel like drinking that day or see how a particular wine is developing over a multi-year period.

I have a box of LFD Box Press II. Why 120 of the same cigar? I love the blend, it's eye/smell candy everytime I open my humidor and I love turning other people on to one of my favorite cigars...

Ok, so as I said, I'm into the collecting side, but I do want to buy some in bulk to reduce the cost. With only a 50 ct humi, I need a way to store say 2 - 3 boxes. Is the term "tupperware/Tupador" actually Tupperware or some brand name of a Humi? I have seen pics on here showing cigars in what looks t be tupperware. If so, just treat it as if it was a nice looking wooden one (in regards to temp/RH?

I think this summarizes the general consensus:

We want our house to be a B&M with free cigars! Whenever I want one, any type, I just go get it to smoke or give away.

I've also noticed that I am searching for the "perfect" cigar. I have had many wonderful cigars but I always am thinking "I wonder if THIS one will be even better!" So I buy more.

Tupperware will work fine for boxes, you just need a good seal and a humidification device.

Try aging a few of your favorites and see what you think, it might be worth it to put a few away. Nothing better than smoking a cigar that you've cared for over the years.

When you go to the beer store, are you always in the mood for the same brand? What if the beer was HUGELY expensive at the stores near home but you could buy it and keep it at home (and it ages, and gets better!), and you have a selection right there in your own home? Awesome, right?

Actually I just did my first cruise by on cigarbid.com. The price difference is huge compared to buying singles. I need to get a better feel for what is a good buy on a box as I have always bought singles and in B&M exclusivly. I definitly still want to support my B&M, without them I wouldn't even be enjoying the ones I do.

I only really "know" 4 - 5 that I would want to buy 25 at a time. I have smoked about 20 various different sticks. I may try a few of my riding Brothers and see if they want to split a box or 2 with me.

I'm with the majority here, I like to collect and have a variety. Kind of a status symbol in some regards. You're doing "okay" if you can have a cabinet humidor and a stash of a few thousand premium cigars, that may just be me though.

Check out some of the sampler deals on cbid. I'm a noob that has had a 150 ct humidor for 3 weeks now, and to try a bunch of different kinds, I've been buying up samplers dirt cheap on there. Each one has 1-5 of a specific kind of cigar and has 10-20 total cigars. I think I've gotten all of my cigars for $2-3/each where if I was buying singles, they'd all have been $5-8 each.

20-30 different smokes is just on the edge of having enough knowledge to buy a box, unless you have found something you really love. Keep smoking more and different sticks. Wrappers, fillers, brands and sizes all make a big difference in taste. As does the environment where they are smoked. A good cold weather smoke will not necessarily be the same in the heat of summer.
Different sizes of the same stick can have very different tastes. Once you find a brand or two you like, try a few different blends of that brand. Most people never find that one stick that fills their humi's, a variety of smokes for different moods or occasions. And then of course you need tons to give and trade and some just to look pretty and age. Add 1,2 and 3 and you have a couple of desktops and at least a 120qt cooler. Then that Vinotemp or Cabinet starts to catch your eye. :ss Thats why they call it the slope.:chk

:tpd: The B&M's near ('near' is a relative term, the closest one is 20 miles away) me don't have a very good selection and they don't carry any of my favorite smokes, so I keep a bunch of the smokes I like on hand. I actually have a JR shop about 3 miles from the house. Prices there beat most of the other 2 places I know for cigars. About 9 floor to wall sections of cigars, maybe 15 - 20 humidor boxes on display and discounts on the purchases. If I remember correctly 10% off 5 singles (except Davidoff (sps) and one other brand) I think 12 - 14% off for 10, etc. Makes it sorta nice.
