View Full Version : Is this plume or mold?
i have been aging some cigars for years and haven't smoked for quite some time and wondered if this is plume, which I think and hope it is or dreaded mold?
I had beetles kill almost a box of PSD4 and some other NC ones. Now I'm a little paranoid.
I hope this pic helps.

Is it white and dusty - if so, you should be able to wipe it off. If that is it, smoke those now, they should be kicka**!! Just smoked a La Perla covered in bloom and it was sweet.
Is it green, blue, bumpy and cannot wipe off? Then, not good news.
I think miki has old dead mold,
Yeup. Exatcly my thoughts.

Ditto on the good link comment.
This is a clip from cigarnexus...
Q: My cigars have something on them. How can I tell if it is mold or bloom?
A: Bloom, also called plume, is a grey/white residual powder that is left from the cigar's essential oils drying on its surface, and is considered a very good sign that the proper aging is taking place. Not all cigars develop bloom, but those that are heavy in oils almost always do over time.
Mold always has some body to it, it is actually a three dimensional "fuzz." Typically it grows rather quickly once it occurs. Also it is commonly green, green/blue, or green/yellow in color.
Typically plume will cover almost evenly all the air-exposed sides of a cigar whereas mold will begin growing on just one part and spread from there.
If you still can't the difference I suggest you quarantine the potential problem cigars to their own tupperdor for a couple of weeks. After which you should be able to tell if it has continued to grow as mold would
In my experience mold requires a bacteria to procreate and therefore occurs where the bacteria was placed and plume is more uniform throughout the cigar also mold as said above is 3 dimensional and plume is more like a coating.

not a 100% sure but it looks like dead mold to me. I wish the pics were just a bit more clear. if it's mold i'm really not sure what the situation is regarding whether to smoke them or not. my first instinct is not to. But, I'm no expert. I hope I'm wrong
