What is the general cause of a cigar having an uneven burn. I typically go through the same routine to light a cigar and some times it's burn is just fine, other times it's quite uneven.

Some cigars just burn uneven, you'll spend the rest of the smoke correcting it. RH and construction play a role, IMHO.

Definitely true....a well constrcuted cigar stored at an improper RH will burn uneven, and a poorly constructed cigar will burn uneven regardless of storgae.

If you are smoking outside, the wind can have an effect on the burn also.

To prevent issues with wind or outdoor conditions, turn it when it starts to get slightly uneven (more than 1/8" difference), keeping the unburned side angled slightly down and away. That will solve most burn issues and prevent the need for touch ups. Extreme wind or environment will still cause problems, so if you're outside in 30 MPH wind, I suggest seeking shelter :)

Also check your RH and ensure everything is calibrated correctly...improper RH, be it too high or too low, will wreak havoc with a cigar you're trying to smoke.
