I owe thanks to BamaDoc77 for the chance to smoke this cigar. Thanks, Doc!
Construction is exellent. It has a deep brown, smooth, shiny wrapper. Very good cap, which took a good cut from the Palio.
Pre-light aroma is very nice, rich, leathery tobacco.
Pre-light draw feels great, with some spice, with a little sweet hint. I am almost afraid of the spice/pepper.
I am lighting this one with a cedar spill. I've been enjoying using spills at home. I like the light that I get. The cigar seems to come into its own quicker too. The aroma is great as the tobacco heats up and takes a great light.
The first inch definitely has some pepper to the nose. However, the overall flavor is different than any NC I have had lately. There is a mingling of flavors that just kinda swirl around. I definitely get some cedar and leather. There is a sweetness just after drawing and on the finish that I am unable to peg. Its not nutty or buttery. It reminds me of when I was a kid. My mom catered weddings, and made huge cakes. I tried a taste of her Vanilla Extract one time. The real stuff, with alcohol. The sweetness resembles that to me. It is not in your face sweet, but enough to keep you guessing.
This cigar is staying consistent flavor-wise. The ash is very silky, and
white/gray. Pretty light ash to be a maduro IMO. Burn is steady and true. I have had only one burn issue. It was my fault though. I got lost in a TV show.
I am almost to the end. It has picked up more spice again. Not in a bad way though, and only on the nose. Still has that soft sweet hint that I described with a deeper leather. This cigar leaves the palate clean feeling with the flavors still mingling.
There is a little nicotine kick. But not in a sickening way. Just relaxing.
Not sure if this would be a stick for a new smoker. Otherwise, it is unlike anythng I have had by Pepin. I am going to try and get a few 5ers to put back. I would love to smoke this one in one year increments to see how it mellows. I bet in a few years you could put it up against some cubans.
I would also like to try this one with a Bourbon or Scotch. I suspect it would pull out more of that sweetness and complexity.
Thanks again, Doc! This was a nice change from the ordinary. I would easily give this one a 9/10 rating. All the elements just made a great experience. It was a great cigar!
