So, I am a big fan of the LOTR Trilogy, have been since I first read the books in the 1970's. So of course I am gravitating towards a church warden.
Can anyone fill me on in the pluses and minuses of this kind of pipe? I want to know what I am getting into.
they're loooooooong...
should make getting any type of "juices" on your tongue, a non-issue.
should also smoke pretty cool (the smoke, not neccessarily the bowl).
you don't have to lift your hand very high to hold it up, good for lazy people, i suppose (teasing).
another funky shape, that reminded me a bit of those "LOTR" type of pipes is a "hawkbill". try searching for one of those, they pretty wild looking.

Aside from the LOTR mystique and the cool smoke, I don't think they're very practical. I have a couple (one being a Dunhill) and I never smoke them. (I did years ago when I played D&D, though.) I find them uncomfortable to hold and you certainly can't travel with them (they don't fit in a pocket or most cases and you look pretty silly pulling one out in public).

Thanks for the advice. I am pretty lazy, and I don't mind looking different, I could not give a wet rats fart what others think about me. I like the idea of no juice and a cool smoke. The bowl seems awfully small though so it looks like it may be high-maintenence.

Benton used to make a decent inexpensive churchwarden(around $30). Don't know who carries them now. Might be worth checking
my 1st advice would be, whatever pipe you get, get at least least (what they call) a 1/2 bent stem (which is 45* angle).
i smoke aromatics the majority of the time, and they smoke a little wetter than the english blends, and the "juices" build up in the bowl, and then can end up going down the stem to your lips/tongue.. it doesn't taste that good - FYI.
bent stems keep that from happening for the most part.
check out this nice lookin pipe from tim west.

Long pipes are some of the best you get a real cool mellow smoke. But be CAREFULL when you knock out the leftovers the stem will break.

I have to admit that because of LOTR I now own 3 Churchwardens. Ask yourself, how did these hobbits (and Gandalf) travel with these pipes? They battled orks, rode horseback, and had all kinds of crazy adventures without ever breaking their Churchwardens.
I hope I didn't hijack this thread. It just seemed relevant as I was reading....
