I have never smoked a pipe in my life, but reading this forum has piqued my curiosity, and just out of that, I was wondering, how does one store pipe tobacco? In a humidor? In a jar?

Sorry. I know absolutely nothing about pipes.

Interested, though.

It doesn't require the same attention that cigars do. You can store it in ziplocks for quite a while. Also, if it ever dries out, it's really easy to rehumidify--just add a little distilled water. I keep some in ziplocks inside of tupperware containers, some tins inside tupperware, some in ziplocks and tins inside of a humidor, and some just lying randomly around my living room. Long term aging takes a little more thought but, in my experience, the tobacco will stay good for quite a few years with pretty much no effort on your part.

Is it like the tobacco in cigars that gets better with age? Or does this not apply because it is loose tobacco? Are aged blends particularly sought after, or is it a non-issue with pipe tobacco?

There are some aged blends that are sought after (Balkan Sobranie comes to mind) but I don't think that, generally, people focus on it like they do in relation to cigars.

Going off of the aged tobaccos I've smoked, I would say that they definitely improve with age--the flavors "meld" and tend to be smoother, imo. I've heard that certain tobaccos have different shelf lives--I believe that I was told that a latakia blend will not last as long as a Virginia, for example (of course, we're talking about 25 years versus 40 years, so take it for what you will).

I usually store mine in Ball (mason) jars. IMHO, some blends do mature nicely, usually those that contain a large amount of "spice" tobaccos (perique, orientals, latakia). The better quality tobaccos usually don't have any PG and will dry out if left open. Croatan's right about re-humidifying , couple of drops of water and your done.

it is a well known fact that straight virginias have a high sugar content and therefore do get better with age. i remember the old mccranies red ribbon actually had sugar crystals on the tobacco and it was straight tobacco. so yes some tobaccos do age very well.

In my opinion its worth the investment. Check out Ebay for competitive prices!

Good containers but I don't think it'll help the OP, Johnnycashfan.

His last visit here was April 2006. :D

Good to see new pipe forum members going back and reading old posts though! That's what I like to do.

No problem brother. You pulled up some threads from '05 and when I looked at the OPs' names , I said to myself "damn, who are these guys?"

I didn't recognize the names and I'm on here everyday! :)
