As a confirmed addict of the Cuban Cigar, would I find anything of intrest in the pipe world?

I've never had the inclination to smoke a pipe, but I read an article else where that somebody had posted by G.L.Please , I found the style pleaseing and followed up, where I found the most enjoyable Briar and Leaf Chronicles.

Which lead me to this post.

You ought to stick around for a while and get your feet wet. Every serious cigar smoker who has smoked a pipe with me has enjoyed it. Pipes offer something that cigars don't: a nearly limitless number of flavor variations over which you, the smoker, have complete control. Think of it as being able to roll your own cigar with the finest leaf available, being able to dictate the final flavor with an level of exactness not typically found in nature.

Don't get me wrong--cigars are my first love. However, for the many of same reasons I appreciate a finely-rolled Habano, I also appreciate a well-carved pipe and the varied tobaccos that go with it.

It's an entirely different (yet perhaps somewhat familiar) smoking experience and something I highly recommend that you try.

Crotan,

A very persuasive response. The concept of "rolling" ones own certainly has ones mind "skipping" off.

I hate the concept of adulteration of tobacco products, how much of this goes on in pipe tobacco circles?

What do you mean by "adulteration"? Aromatic tobaccos (of which I am not a huge fan) typically have some flavoring added to them.

The addition of anything to the tobacco, that is not essential to the curing fermentation process, ie cigar tobacco as opposed to cigarette tobacco.

The only additives of which I am aware are the casings added to aromatics. Traditionally, English blends have been nothing but pure tobacco--the various flavors are achieved by blending different tobaccos (e.g. latakia, perique, and virginia).

Being such a beginner and still without the right tools for this I'm up to try every type whether it have some flavorings or not. But I would definately lean towards staying with the traditional mixing of the tobaccos for flavoring.

I'll tell you what .... I've been smoking a bowl of pipe tobacco nightly for the past two weeks and I don't miss cigars at all. I really like the pipe tobacco flavors, ability to smoke a part bowl and come back, and the beauty of nicely made pipes. The fact that you can get awesome pipe tobacco without spending a fortune is a bonus but not the real attraction.

Not my pipe but I want one, just love the grain.

Well I've had a think ,and I might just put a pipe on my Santas wish list.

Sean, I think from your posts we may have similar taste in sticks, what type of pipe do you have? and what are you smoking in it.

I can't imagine it repalcing my Cuban desires, but I accept its a slim possibility.

Is the smoke inhaled or treated like a cigar?

I have a meerschaum from madurofan and an inexpensive Savinelli briar right now with a few unsmoked estate pipes from ebay on the way. They smoke differently ..... don't have a preference right now.

Tobaccos I've been enjoying include Pease - Haddo's Delight and Esoterica - Penzance. You don't inhale, but can blow out your nose like a cigar. No worries about plugged cigars!

I've been doing my reading up, I think a meerschaum for initial ease of use, and bent, to as IHT put it "stop the jucies" uck.

What size of bowl for a newbie.? And what tobaacos that have that Cuban hit?
or its equivilent. I'm a former longterm hand rolling smoker, and usually smoke 3 cigars a day. ISOM's only at weekends. favorite cigar RASS with a few years on it.
