http://www.cigarandtabac.com/estatepipes9.htm they have it in the estate catalogue at the shop near me.. i'd like to get one used that already has a cake built up so i don't go ruin it or anything. and its only $35.

The quality of GBD pipes has varied considerably over the years (at times they've been considered high end, other times they've been middle-to-low end); however, at $35, it's pretty hard to go wrong.

I would personally have two reservations: 1) I like a bent stem--it keeps smoke out of my eyes and is more comfortable in my mouth 2) I don't like estate pipes--I know they're clean, I just don't like the idea of sucking on something that's been in God knows whose mouth. Obviously, these reservations are personal to me and many others would disagree with me, so keep that in mind.

Whatever you decide, congrats on your first pipe!

You can buy an inexpensive Savinelli Duca Carlo new for that price.

The other thing about pre-smoked Estate pipes is that the flavors of the tobacco favored by its previous owner(s) may still transfer. Not a problem if they smoked what you like, but it they smoked something you hate it may mess up the flavors of your tobacco.

I wouldn't worry about the breakin ... look at some of the information online (rub inside with thin coat of honey or water recommended in some places). www.pipes.org seems to have a lot of good information.

i live in the KC area as well...
that's the place i buy my pipe tobacco from (warwick, peach cobbler, black forrest).

nice place, but i haven't been there in about a year.

it's an "okay" pipe, but i would advise in your first pipe being at least a 1/4 bent stem instead of a straight stem like that one.

if you have a ****** account, you can nab some nice stanwells for around $20-40 each new.

i dunno, he states the stems have been "chewed badly"....

of course, since this guy lives by cigar and tabac, they do make replacement stems for around $20 or so (last time i asked).

thanks for all the replies. i would like a bent stem better as well... i was just concerned with the breakin thing. you guys are probably right though in that its not a big deal. i'll probably go there sometime soon. i'd like to buy one locally so i know what i'm getting exactly and all.

this wouldn't actually be my first pipe.. i occasionally use one that i made a few years back in a shop class i took. It's a tad bit rough to say the least, but i like the long stem. but ya thats for a different thread
