Dear LLGs,
finally the postman delivered a few, long-waited new babies to my frontdoor. Between them, the 2 Punchs I am going to review here. Both are quite young, and the Rare Corojo is the new kinda limited Punch edition, presented as fuller in body than the regular and "back to popular demand" (!)... Both goes for 2 to 3 US$ a stick.
Wrapper
RC: the aged(?) Corojo wrapper looks beautiful, rosado color, silky, smooth at touch, very light veins. The cigar is box pressed, construction seem good, no soft patches, firm at touch.
DM: the DM wrapper is also very good looking, dark brown, silky, and the construction seems perfect as well. Veins are more pronunciated here.
Pre-light:
RC: lightly spicy, easy draw, lighting was easy enough.
DM: definitely spicy and strong, easy draw, easy to light.
Draw,burning & ashes:
RC: good draw, providing a lot of smoke; not so even in burning, needed some corrections; white ash but really flacky.
DM: perfect draw, mouthful of smoke; good even burning; great firm ashes, light grey in color, that did not want to fall down! (at the end, I had only 2 big chunks of hard ashes left in my ashtray!)
Taste:
RC: The Rare Corojo started with a mild, mellow, kind of a strange taste; ammonia was (too often) kicking in every here and then (hopefully due to the young age), no interesting tastes to pick, no power, nothing whatsoever...
DM: This started as a medium bodied small cigar, quite tasteful, "woody" in some way, could even pick some cocoa between first third and 1/2; then, it calmed down. Pleasant, enjoyable maybe, but no more than that until the end.
Final third:
RC: Surprisingly for a short smoke and for a young cigar, here is where the power and some tastes kicked in: I was almost dropping it down when I reached the band, but I continued smoking and some flavors started to appear, some earthy notes, then fresh... and some power! I went on, nearly until I was burning my fingers and at the end I got even a slight buzz from this one... (factor, 6/7... no big deal, but it was there!).
DM: Took off the band to go on smoking and see what happens, after the RC experience. Nothing... unfortunately, nothing happened.
Aftertaste:
RC: Quite unpleasant, stayed in my mouth for nearly an hour, promising to be with me for longer. I eat a piece of real italian Parmigiano and let it go... :-)
DM: Not such a strong aftertaste, here as well this cigar did not leave me with memories.
Overall:
RC: Just another disappointing kind of marketing operation, maybe, but the final gave me some hopes for slight aging improvements (at least, the ammonia should go!); I'll keep them for a while and give them another try. Score: 6 to 6.5 for its beauty and my hopes (would be 4 to 5...) :-)
DM: A good everyday cigar, good for the money even if in that price range I better get a Padron 2000; I will give this one too another try soon. Score: 6.5
That's all folks...
Quite a disappointing cigar day, today. I am thinking about smoking a C.A.O. Petite (ever tried? a great cigarillo...) to clean my mouth from these two babies!
