Dupont X Tend

I have had a few of these for awhile and decided I would write a review about them. I have the standard size.

These lighters are made by the famous maker S.T. Dupont. Dupont is known for their high quality and high prices. I have always been a cigar accessory nut. I have owned many different kinds of lighters. I must say this is one of my favorite.

The lighter features a jet style flame. It is 2 ˝” long and 1 ˝” wide. It has a flame adjuster on the bottom that can be adjusted with your finger nail or small screw driver. I have no problems using my nail. Also on the bottom there is a fuel window. They accept standard butane that can be bought at any cigar shop.

The body of the lighter is made of what I believe to be aluminum. To light the lighter you squeeze a long bar that runs along the side of the lighter. Were the flame comes out there is a protective cover that opens and closes as you light the lighter. It keeps dust, dirt, and lint, out of the lighter.

It also has a built in safety that locks the lighter when it is upside down in your pocket. If you shake the lighter you can hear the safety moving around. I believe it is like a small ball bearing that falls into place to block it from lighting.

These lighters come in a rainbow of colors as well as special edition ones. Ranging from an Opus X to 007 versions. They also offer a mini version of this lighter. Prices range from around $100 to $160.00 depending on which version and from who you get it from. You can find these on the used market (Ebay) for some great prices.

They might be a little pricy but I think they are well worth the money. I have known people to have these for many years with no problems. On a scale of 1-10 I would rate this 8. It only falls short in one area. I wished it felt a little “more expensive” Not that it feels cheap, I wished it had a little more heft to it. If I lost the ones I have I would not hesitate buying another one a full retail.

Just my (what ever thats worth) RJT

SORRY FOR THE DBL POST. I PUT THE FIRST ONE IN THE WRONG SECTION. CAN SOMEONE MOVE IT? RJT

Excellent review RJT. I only have one lighter and it's the Xtend. I've had it now for about 3 years without ever having a problem with it. I've even washed it in the washer once. Lit on the first try after that. And, it still looks great, with only a few nicks here and there. I'd definitely buy another one if I lost this one.

I've had 2 for a couple of years and one finally died. I have had friends who have had nothing but headaches with theirs. I also hate the very small resevior, it constantly needs to be refilled. The flame is excellent and when the lighter works it is a very nice lighter.

People need to be reminded that it is still just a Colibri, so quality is something that is a crapshoot.

Dupont is a subcompany of colibri?

Which lighter do you recommend master?

Their regular butane ones are made in France, not sure about the Xtend. Porsche Design does a nice torch lighter too. Davidoff flint-butane lighters are made by Dupont as well.

I hope the Xtend is not made by Colibri. Dupont farms out a few of their products like dress shirts, ties, belts (all of which are of the highest quality).

Not exactly sure about your info on the Colibri stuff. I will say you are one of the very few I have heard having problems. Not saying they are problem free just not heard alot about it. Also I think the lighter holds more than enough fuel. Sorry you had the bad luck. RJT

Just got off the phone with Dupont. None of the Dupont lighters are made by Colibri. Colibri Company acts as a US distributor for DUPONT but that is as far as it goes. Everything is handled totally seperate from warehouses to repairs. Just a little FYI. Thanks, RJT

S.T. Dupont is definitely NOT a "subcompany" of Colibri.

I really need to pick up one of the X-Tend's. It'd be a nice everyday lighter since i smoke cigarettes as well.

As for cigars, i have a silver Dupont, i just got a gorgeous gold Davidoff prestige model. Then i also have a gold Dunhill rollagas, and silver Dunhill Unique. I LOVE lighters. i have a huge collection of zippos and the like.

Porsche Design make kick ass lighters as well. I love giving lighters as gifts to close friends, and the last one i gave was a Porsche. 2 weeks into them using it, my friend left it in his pants and tossed it into the wash on accident!

next day it worked perfect!

One question about the X-tends. Is it a quiet lighter? I hate those turbo jet lighters that sound like a welder when you go to use it.

Nice review.. my budget won't allow that much dough to be spent on a lighter, but who knows, maybe I'll get one for my birthday on Sunday ;)

I thought that way too at first, but gotta say it's well worth the money IMO. I've had it now for about 3 years and I've never had ANY problems with it. It definitely beats having to spend $20-30 a pop for the lower end torches and having to replace them constantly. That's just my opinion though. Others have bought the regular lighters and been perfectly happy.

I just got mine from Mark, and I'm smoking up a storm, just to use it. Its flame has just the right qualities for lighting cigars.
I've seen it mentioned several times, that the upside down lock-out feature is intended for pocket safety. After some newby usage, I believe this feature is actually intended as a palm saver! :D

Don't think of a Dupont as a purchase, but rather an investment. I've had my Dupont flint lighter for 7 years and is running strong. I had to get it serviced a few years ago for around $60.00, but they are going to last you into your golden years.

I'm buying an Xtend soon and was just wondering how you guys keep your Xtends when it's with you. Do you have a small pouch or a leather case? I'm not sure but I don't believe S.T. Dupont has any torch cases -- at least not for the Xtend.

On the other hand, I'm getting a matte version of Xtend so I'd imagine it's not get scratches very easily, at least not as easily as those glossy/DuoTone -versions. Based on your experience, would it be okey if one was to carry the Xtend without any case inside a pocket (being the only object in there). Obviously I wouldn't put it in a pocket with keys and such.

You are correct, they don't make a case specifically for the X-tend but the "Contraste" case works but not perfectly.

If you do plan on carrying it as your "go to" lighter, I'd highly recommend the matte finishes as they don't show scratches or fingerprints nearly as much as the gloss models.

Hope this helps!

I highly recommend finding some sort of thin leather pouch like a--don't laugh--coin purse or even a silk sunglasses bag for your new XTend. I've had a Maori print one that's done reasonably well, but with just one drop that beautiful chocolate and black design got a nasty little nick in it, detracting from its aesthetics.

Also, I have to echo the initial review on one deficit--these things feel light, no heft to them like the other Duponts. While the metal bar you depress to light the thing always works well, it feels a touch flimsy. I've never had a single mechanical problem with it, so take all of this as just minor griping about an excellent lighter. I'll definitely buy another if/when this one gives out...

This is very true. The prices and most importantly the customer service are peerless. Mark treats you like a friend.

Also the Dupont Xtend is a great lighter, very durable.

The only problem with pretty lighters is that when you drop it, and you will, you'll be pissed. I can only imagine dropping one of those expensive Duponts, you know the ones made with soft soft gold. Ouch!

Go for it, after I got my first Xtend I was tempted to by more in different colors they are such amazing lighters. as for the carring in pocket, as long as nothing is in there it will stay perfect forever, I once accidentally put the black matte in with my cell phone( dark grey RAZR) and it got a little scratched ...actually more like scuffed but it didnt really detract from it look much at all. so dont worry too much about it.

Just buy one you will love it.

You can find some great deals on Ebay if you watch the auctions closley. Also some people have said to get a case. You can also get a case on Ebay. Most likley the case will be a fake but I have never seen a fake Xtend lighter. I have given you a few links. I have never bought from any of these dealers and only giving them as a refrence on prices and selection. Good luck RJT

:D I think the only thing wrong with Xtend lighters is that there are too many colours to choose from. I've had a tough time deciding on which Xtend to pair up with my soon-to-have Burlwood Palio. Right now I'm leaning towars a silver matte one but things may change... :r
