I just recieved my 5 count herfador. Looks great, h as an awsome close, tight as alll hell. I put some distilled water in the little sponge to keep th ehumidity up... put in a Ashton VSG Torpedo.... Sancho Panza E.F, a isom, and a LVH Chataeu #3. Lets just say the ashton did not impress me. Its is a top $$$ cigar... but there was somethign strange about it. Its been sitting in my humidor for months as well. My buddy also had issues with the sancho panza... all in all a horrible night for cigars. I am thinking it had somethign to do with the herf-a-dor. It doesnt really have a bad scent... but what was the issue? I was really looking forward in the Ahston VSG for literally months... but the dissapointment may have led me to A- Never buy one again because of the cost or B- Dought the quality of the herf-a-dor. If that was the case... i dont feel like i need to be putting any top notch sticks in it... and i would much rather stick with a bag... and beads.
any help?

I don't really think your herf-a-dor had anything to do with it. I have been using one for a while now and it has never changed my cigars.
I would say you just didn't like the VSG, you can trust the Herf-A-Dor :)

I don't know how I feel about those cigar travel cases with foam. It's hard to believe that the foam can be 100% safe as far as not imparting any flavor to the smokes. I'd rather just keep a cheapie 20 count cedar lined humi for travel purposes. If one is worried about it opening, use some masking tape :) And if the issue is cigars bouncing around inside, fill it up or put them in some bubble wrap hehe.
Do you have a hygrometer or at least confirmed the RH in the box? I just got an Otterbox 5540 which is bigger it holds 32 cigars but it came with the 50/50 solution. I filled up the humidifier and put a digital hygrometer in there and left it for a couple days. I opened it tonight to find the RH at 91%. The nice thing about the Otterbox is it has a round humidifier and I pulled it out and popped it open and threw the green foam away. I replaced it with a small bag of 65% beads and just checked it and it is spot on.
Not to say that your herf-a-dor isn't working fine and you just didn't care for the cigars. I would maybe try to get a hold of another Ashton sooner than later and try it with out storing it in the herf-a-dor. Or you could buy two of the same cigar and put one in the herf-a-dor and one in another storage place. Let them both rest for a certain period and give them both a try. Good luck.

I have 2 Herf-a-dor's, one that holds 5 sticks that I keep in my golf bag and one that holds 15 sticks that I take on golf weekends. I have been using them all summer and have carried 100+ sticks in them with out any problems. The cigar tastes just like when I pull them from one of my bigger humidors. I have never used them for long term storage but in the week or less the cigars are in there I have never had one change for better or worse. Hope this helps some.

I dont think its the Herf-A-Dor.
I have a few of these and have never had an odor problem or ever had it effect my cigars flavors at all.
You either have a bad cigar or maybe even a bad palate.

While we're on the subject of Herf-A-Dors, do you all use green foam humidifiers that come with it or do you use something else?
Also, do you "Season" it in any way?
I find it hard to believe that there can be an even distribution of RH with the humidifier at one side and all that foam in there.

My palate is developed anough to know a good smoke from a bad one.. and the ashton wasnt pleasing. i am Beginnning to think the La Vieja Habana had something to do with the taste on the other smokes. When i received the box it was slightly moist... and the inner box had 80+++% humidity. Most of the smokes are awsome, but this might have brought some bad in the formula. I will never dought the quality of the ashton... but for the price payed i just dono how much i am willing to dish out again to full experience one again

I use a Cigar Caddy (5-ct.), and haven't expereienced any flavor problems I can attribute to the foam lining... However, I HAVE noticed flavor problems attributable to a "rushed" smoke on the run!
(IMHO) A good cigar will be most delicious when it's given ample time to smoke. I can't remember how many "lunchtime" cigars seem to have fallen short of my expectations... YET, I remember very few after-dinner cigars that haven't delivered!
AH Well... Onward & Forward!!!

Well, first off, I would not bother with any water or solution in the Herf-a-dor. They are really for short term storage and the cigars themselves should provide all the humidity you need for a few days.
And the foam can pick up odors. I made the mistake of leaving mine open for a while in a crowded cigar bar once. THe foam held the scent of the stale smoke for a while. I had to leave it open and let it air out.

This is the greatest advice as of yet. and its 100% true... how could a TINY foam humi. keep the cigars well.. when they are already stable on there own in small containers.... and its only for short term. I popped the little thing out... ill keep it just incase.... but thanks for all the help guys i come to the final conclusion that it was the La Vieja habana... Thanks again =]

I have a 10ct and I have had a 5ct (traded) and a 15ct (gifted) and on the 10 and 15 I took out the divider layers of foam and kept a block of cedar from a sampler box and all of my smokes have been great. I also have used a cigar card humidification device occasionally in order to maintain proper rh.

I wouldnt say that it was the LVH. They are a great smoke. Although not Ashton caliber, but still a great smoke. I think you just got a bad one.

But my friend had a sancho panza E.F the same night from the same herf-a-dor and noticed similar tastes with both of them...it wasnt pleasent... I think the LVH might have been gotten wet and picked up a whicked odor that leaked onto the others.

Ive got a 15 ct herf-a-dor, and I like it.. no problems with it. Im thinking you just don't care for VSG's.. Not everyone likes em..
