I must say that The Lord of the Rings trillogy was not a dissapointment as many movies made from great books are. I first read the books in '82 when I was in the 7th grade and have been waiting for a movie about them ever since. The passion that the characters (with the exeption of Legolas) have for smoking is unparalleled by any other books I have read, although it is only mildly represented in the movie. Even though they are pipe smokers (which I recently got into) Tolkien dedicated a whole section of the prologue to "pipe weed", which owes no doubt to Tolkien's own passion for the pipe. Hopefuly we can all enjoy something as good as a bit of "Longbottom Leaf from the South Farthing" while enjoying a good book or movie.

I am a fan from reading these books as a kid Indeed the movie was an epic. Definitely once it comes out on DVD will be making the purchase. Hopefully they'll have the trilogy. :D

I read these books when I was little as well. When I found out a few years before the first one came out I thought whoever was doing it was either going to screw it up big time or do a fantastic job. Wow! I am glad Peter Jackson did it. Could you imagine if someone like George Lucas did the directing? The terrible acting in the new Star Wars films makes me puke! I can't wait for the Return of the King DVD, and extended edition DVD.
BTW - Are they supposed to be smoking pot or tobacco?
I would have to think it would be tobacco because J.R.R.T. had kids when he wrote these books, yet I have a buddy (who loves pot) that insists they are smoking dope.

I dont think it was really clarified in the books what they were smoking.

aston smoked a vanilla blend that he got from a composer friend of his. he had to bring all that he was allowed back from cali when he came back to continue filming. the pipes were made of ash. they use the term pipeweed and that southfarthing has the best pipeweed. happen to have a tin of it myself (special gl pease blend made for a pipeshow).

From the chapter "Flotsam and Jestam" in the Two Towers it specificly states that at Isengard they came upon Longbottom leaf that had the Hornblower marks on it from the southfarthing. Everything the Hobbits smoked before that is assumed to be longbottom leaf from the southfarthing but as for what Aragorn, Gimily, and Gandalf smoked that is not as sure (exept for the booty from Isengard). Aragorn spent a lot of time guarding the Shire so it may be assumed that he smoked pipeweed from the Shire or Bree.

It does not sound like they were smoking dope. The same guy that told me they were smoking dope told me that Cuban's are the best cigars because they have marijuana leaves in the blend :r

where the hell do people get that idea from?? my teenage step-son asked me if that's WHY cuban cigars were illegal?? i about died laughing!! (he probably wanted some ammo since he fessed up to getting high a few times).
--------------
i FINALLY saw the 3rd movie (missed most of the 2nd due to scratches made by the irresponsible teenage step-son).. never read the books...
okay, the 3rd movie was good, but, my being a cameraman/editor/director/mixer, i felt i could've edited out about 1/2 the movie and nobody would've noticed.
WHAT??!!
yes, the last 30 minutes of the movie was nothing but teary eyes and no talking... that's just 30 minutes i could've chopped out and the movie wouldn't still been in tact... "MR. FRODO".
i didn't really dwell on all of the needless teary eyed BS during the movie, as it was good, but c'mon... yes, it's nice to see liv tylers face often, but give her a line in the movie, make her do something other than stare at the camera with tears welling up...
and, someone TELL ME WHERE THE FLUCK THOSE DAMN EAGLES CAME FROM???
WHY DID THE GRAND POO-BAH WIZARD JUST SIT ON HIS AZZ HALF THE MOVIE, and then all of the sudden, he flies in on an eagle and saves Frodo and Sam??
sure, he can ride up and wave his wand and those big ol' dragons take off... he knew they were alive and in the area, why didn't he just do some ol' Sesame Street style stuff, "ALA PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICHES", and poof, he finds the dudes (who needed some serious chapstick) and save them earlier??
now, i'll say it again, it was a really cool movie, even on it's own, but there were some things that just didnt' make sense to me.
and what happened to those kickass lookin horse riding guys from the first movie?
i see they gave the Archer guy a grand total of 2-3 lines in this movie...
i'm sure i'll buy the 3 box set when it comes out (the first 2 DVDs i have are probably both scratched to death by now).

Those kick ass guys that were on the horses were on those flying dragons in this movie - the Nosgul. The eagles come because Gandalf sent his butterfly or whatever to go get them, the eagles are in another film, can't remember which one. I think they are in the first one, when Gandalf falls off the tower in minis tirith (the tower where he is fighting saruman). I read the books a long time ago, so I don't know if Gandalf does more to kick ass in there or not, but you are correct, it seems like he could have done more with his powers.
And that same guy that told me that cubans had weed in them thought they were illegal for that reason too :r

First it is Nazgul and they were not dragons but in the book are discribed as "carion beast with wings". The eagles actualy came because Gandalf met Radgast the Brown (another wizard from his order not mentioned in the movies) and Radgast told Gandalf that Saruman wanted to see him, Saruman was really plotting to turn or capture Gandalf but Radgast did not know this so Gandalf told Radgast to have any news sent to him at Isengard because Radgast powers lay with shapes, hues, and animals and they were all his friends. So Radgast sent the eagles with news to Isengard, and when the eagles got there they found Gandalf trapped and freed him. And yes Gandalf does some more stuff in the books than is showed in the movie but not as much as you might think because the powers that sent the wizards (there were 5 but only 3 are mentioned) forbade them to use power against power to defeat the enemy...that is part of the reason Saurman fell. And the last 30 min of the movie tried to cover several chapters in the book but glosed over a lot of it, for instance the scurging of the Shire. When the hobbits get back they find the Shire is "war torn" and under evil power so the four companions lead a rebellion to drive out the enemy wich turns out to be Saurman, who by this time was bereft of his powers which Gandalf striped from him when he expelled him from the Order (which the movie aslo skipped). Oh and the battle at the Black Gates was a bit different in the books as was Aragorn's role which would have needed more explaining than a movie would alow. But the eagles were summend by Giwndor, lord of the eagles who pleged to help Gandalf in his strugle against Mordor.

Thanks for clearing that up Scuba Steve, I need to read those again some time!
clears some of it up. figured those guys on the dragon things were the same, but didn't get the cool play they did in the 1st movie.
still didn't tell me where the f*ck those eagles came from IN THE MOVIE. some of us didn't read the books, would've been nice to get those things explained.
and the last 30 minutes i was referring to were just the teary eyed BS on the docks... and all the other teary eyed scenes where we had to watch for minutes on end, just people staring at each other about to boo-hoo.

Yes I agree that the movie did not do a good job with the end, but they did not have the time to go through the "Scurging of the Shire" and to just end it at the crowning of Aragon would have sent many die hard Tolkien fans in to temper tantrums. They could have done better.
The books do not even give any detail on how the eagles get there but it is assumed, at least by me, that they saw the battle from their home in the Misty Mountains as they did in the Battle of the Five Armies in "The Hobbit" and came to help Gandalf who seemed to have a special relationship with Gwaihir the Windlord, king of the eagles.
