Ok just a quick thread to see what everybody is jammin' out to this evening.

I myself have decided to go with Led Zepplin's "IV" this evening to spice it up a little bit. I probably will move on to CCR after that just to get me back in the state of relaxation. :w Groovin' :w

Since the holidays are fast approaching, I got into a major cleaning-mode this evening. I had a wide variety of music in my cd changer, from Wes Montgomery to the Chili Peppers. A while back I was selling high-end audio and video, and picked up some Sonus Faber speakers that are just unbelievable!!

That's what I like about doing stuff around the house. You pull out some old stuff that you haven't played in a while, and just go... :D

Alright, this is a thread that brings me out of lurking mode. I love the Fugazi and Minor Threat references. I love the old hardcore, but never got into the straightedge movement, I like my vices too much. But Old School punk rock gets me every time. Today I've been listening to Black Flag's Damaged, The Clash on Broadway and the Minutemen's Double Nickels On The Dime.

this is hilarious!! two guys i'd never imagine listening to fugazi or minor threat... hell, i sat on stage with fugazi when they first came out, right next to ian on the guitar... "sitting in the waiting room". but that is nothing compared to minor threat..

yes, i was a straight-edge skinhead... ah... those were the days.... S.H.A.R.P. skin at that (skin heads AGAINST racial prejudice), keep that in mind. i don't want to get into all that stuff, it had to deal with it all the time in the 80s...

anyway, what am "I" listening to today?
well, on my long drive from the KC area to STL for my grandmas funeral, i went in this order:
Bjork
System of a Down
Bad Brains
Bad Brains
Rage Against the Machine

talk about hardcore stuff... i could talk all day. any show that played in the STL area from, say, '85 - 90, i was there. pick a group... black flag was the first show i went to... my 16th B-day was spent getting my chin gashed open to a canadian band called SNFU (very cool singer, i talked to him for about an hour).

ah.... those were the days.

btw - my favorite black flag album is "my war". the first side is all hyped up, the 2nd side is only 3 songs, but they're 15 minutes each. when i would get depressed, i'd listen to the 2nd side all night long.

but, as my contest proved, BAD BRAINS is the best band of all time.

one time in school, our project was to name all the groups we've seen in concert.. some people had 1 or 2 groups, i filled up 2 pages front and back... obscure bands from all over the country... from NY (agnostic front 4 times, warzone twice) from chi (life sentence) from colorado (dead silence) to all the LA bands (7 seconds, circle jerks - in the same show!) even some cool pre-grunge groups in seattle, like the accused and a straight-edge group from up there as well, the brotherhood....

okay, i'll shut up now.

I love this. My very first concert was in 1986 and it was in Bremerton, a small navy town outside of Seattle, at a closed roller skating rink. It was the Accused, DRI and a death metal band called Holy Terror.

Although, as a Seattle transplant to my new hometown of Reno, I must point out that 7 Seconds was a Reno band, not LA. And Black Flag's My War is a remarkable album and definitely one for the ages.

Almost forgot to add that Bad Brains is one of my favorite bands of all time! Rock For Light is amazing. Who would have thought that three Rastafarians (who started what they thought would be a jazz fusion band) would leave such a mark on hardcore?

Hmmm... you guys are youngsters, I see.....

Ever since the first EP by The Descendents I ahve been hooked. I've seen them and ALL many, many times. Was first introduced to the punk scene by my uncle (The Clash, The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, Patti Smith, etc., etc.). Got into skateboarding and migrated towards the straightedge movement. But, it was the Minor Threat type straightedge movement. Just making sure that nothing was controlling my life other than myself. Pretty much stick to that nowadays too. East coast bands I got into were Minor Threat, Agnostic Front, Dag Nasty, The Ramones and quite a few other Dischord bands. I was more into the west coast bands though. The Descendents, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, Aggression, MIA, TSOL, DI, The Adolescents, X, The Germs, 7 Seconds, Youth of Today, Social Distortion... I could go on forever, here. Being so close to Chicago we had our share of cool bands too. Naked Raygun was a big draw around here.

I played in a couple of bands, pretty much our own style, but it would probably be considered Chicago hardcore. A couple of the guys I played with were in Negative Element, who you hardcore guys may or may not have heard of. One of the guys who hung out with us was Bloody Mess, anyone who knows GG Allin real good should probably know Bloody, also. Damn dudes, those were the days.......

Yeah, Kamikaiguy, I absolutely love my Sonus Faber speakers! They're difficult to find, a niche market, if you will. I was able to get them at cost (which was the only way I could've gotten them!) :D . That Yami is a pretty sweet receiver, too. I used to sell a ton of Yami receivers (glad they came back), along with Pioneer and Denon. On the higher end, we did a lot of Krell and Rotel. Speaker-wise, we had the Energy line, as well as Polk, Klipsch, Kef, B&W and a few others. We did a ton of Pioneer plasma and Runco projectors, too. Everybody needs their toys!! :D

Got into skateboarding and migrated towards the straightedge movement. But, it was the Minor Threat type straightedge movement. <IHT - was there another straight edge movement that i didn't know about?>

Just making sure that nothing was controlling my life other than myself. Pretty much stick to that nowadays too. East coast bands I got into were Minor Threat, Agnostic Front, Dag Nasty, The Ramones and quite a few other Dischord bands. I was more into the west coast bands though. The Descendents, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, Aggression, MIA, TSOL, DI, The Adolescents, X, The Germs, 7 Seconds, Youth of Today <IHT - youth of today was totally a NYC band, revelation records label, etc. i have all their tapes, or did> , Social Distortion... I could go on forever, here. Being so close to Chicago we had our share of cool bands too. Naked Raygun was a big draw around here. <IHT - life sentence was a cool local chicago band that would show up in StL every once in a while. also, all the talk of straight edge, and you listened to social distortion "aka - sellouts", and the ramones!!?? just teasing...>

<IHT - not a GG Allin fan at all. i wasn't into all that nasty type of stuff. doin' things just to gross out the crowd and be totally rude for no reason.>

those were the days, that's true.

I love this. My very first concert was in 1986 and it was in Bremerton, a small navy town outside of Seattle, at a closed roller skating rink. It was the Accused, DRI and a death metal band called Holy Terror. <IHT - yep, the accused could rock your jock off, that's for sure. i loved their song, "scared of the dark." shook our little pub like crazy. i remember standing on the stage next to them, on top of their stacks they had to lay on their sides... they were traveling with some heavy metal band as well, so we all took off our shirts, stuck them on our heads and acted like we were banging our heads. DRI, man, those guys were frickin funny. they had some very good songs on one of their first albums, can't remember what it was called. mad man, nursing home blues, etc.>

Although, as a Seattle transplant to my new hometown of Reno, I must point out that 7 Seconds was a Reno band, not LA. And Black Flag's My War is a remarkable album and definitely one for the ages. <IHT - my fault, everyone assumed they were from LA because they had that typical LA punk sound goin' on. they played down off the Delmar Loop in St. Louis with Circle Jerks in an old skating rink. the local bands that opened were pretty good as well, one of them called "laffinstock". unfortunately, they had to stop the show for "fire hazard" reasons - pretty much, it was a stage dive fest and the locals weren't too happy about it.>

Almost forgot to add that Bad Brains is one of my favorite bands of all time! Rock For Light is amazing.
<IHT - i listened to that on the way back from the funeral yesterday afternoon. by far, my favorite punk band of all time. hell, i even owned some of HR (their singer) reggae tapes.> Who would have thought that three Rastafarians (who started what they thought would be a jazz fusion band) would leave such a mark on hardcore? <IHT - most of my albums show 4 guys, but that doesn't matter. yep, amazing when i play this and some of my co-workers are like "what's that junk, man?" then i show them the CD insert and they're like, "those dudes is black?" uh... yep. i turned coppertop onto these guys last year... he's now a huge bad brains fan as well.>

cue the archie bunker tunes.... "THOSE WERE THE DAYS....."

hey, is that "lemmie" from motorhead in your avitar?
ACE OF SPADES!! i found it funny that all the british punk bands loved motorhead... hell, i didn't know who they were until i saw "the exploited" and wattie buchan was wearing a motorhead t-shirt...

Wow, well unfortunatly I didn't grow up around cool music. It wasn't until high school and college where I discovered the music that I listen to now. And then working with/for IHT has helped a lot. He has introduced me to Bad Brains and some older DK. But I also love Naked Raygun, one of my favorite bands.

I also am a Queens of the Stone Age fan, have been for about 5 yrs now, way before they got played on MTV and the damn radio. Modest Mouse is another cool band. Once again I listened to them before they were ever played on fuggin MTV.

Bjork, Voodoo Glow Skulls(thanks to IHT), Less Then Jake(also thanks to IHT). And a bunch more. I am not really into "mainstream" music. Although I do like some System of a Down. yadda yadda yadda

Forgot to add that I also enjoy Tribe Called Quest. Been a fan of them for a long time, ever since Low End Theory. My all time fav rock/rap group would be Beastie Boys. Been listening to them since License to Ill. Although I don't like thier new albumn at all.......to political for my tastes.

Yeah...just released within the last few weeks. I've got Sehnsucht, Mutter, and Live aus Berlin. Never picked up Herzlied (their first), but the live record has at least half of those tracks on it anyway. I'll have to pick up the new one soon. I've heard two tracks, 'Amerika', in which Till sings a good bit of english, and rips the Ol' U S of A pretty good (the video is hilarious though and some of the lyrics are even funny - any of you guys ever took german in highschool and said "wunder...b..b.bra?" then you know what I'm talking about), and 'Mein Teil'. Both are in line with what you'd expect. I hope the rest of the album is as good.

Anyone enjoy Guster? It was pretty funny seeing the difference in popularity they achieved. The first time we saw them in concert, the venue had around 30,maybe 50 at the most, people there. Good time. The second time we saw them, about 4 months later at the same place, it was packed. Around 300-400 people. Not that big, I know, but still. ;)

I myself have decided to go with Led Zepplin's "IV" this evening to spice it up a little bit. I probably will move on to CCR after that just to get me back in the state of relaxation. :w Groovin' :w

Oh I agree that Glenn Danzig is not the friendliest of people and has a rather high opinion of himself but I just love his music. I was a semi Misfits fan, liked some of their stuff but didn't get heavy into it or anything. When Glenn did Samhain I started to pay a little more attention, you know it was a little heavier and a little more my speed. Then when the first Danzig came out I was blown away. It was exactly what I was looking for. Been an instant fan ever since. Loved all of his releases since then and have purchased everything he's put out thus far. I agree he's not that personable but hey I don't have to deal with him on a daily basis so I'm ok with that. :D

From what I've gathered from my Dad, it was basically Miles locking some of the best players of the time into a room and with no practice, playing the music as they felt it. It really comes through with the genius of Miles as well as the other players. Listen to it with headphones or good speakers and pay attention it's brilliant!

Funny - I got hooked on Fugazi first, and never really got too caught up in Minor Threat. You wouldn't be the first people to mock me for that. Personally, I think repeater, 13 songs, and inonthekilltaker are pretty much un(s)toppable.

On the rotation recently:

the Wrens, "The Meadowlands" -- fantastic. You indie rockers would probably like this. Give it a listen.

Elgar's 1st Symphony (strange but bits of Bernard Hermann's scores for Hitch. movies sound like this ... thinking in particular of N by NW).

"Workin With", "Steaming With", "Relaxing With" and "Cooking With" Miles Davis. I was really into Jazz in HS and college. Got away from it for a while. I popped these in the player and was blown away. I forgot how good this stuff really is. Hard to beat this series of albums!

Of course, at work I'm hearing Sinatra, Roger Miller, Les Brown Orch., more Sinatra....but today......???Robert Plant-- Sea of Love????
Seems little out of place. I love the older mucic, God knows there's hardly any good "new" music, that's why American Idol is successful IMHO, but too much Sinatra can wear on a man.

I love the Femmes. The Ned's Atomic Dustbin gave me a flashback too. Been a long time since I listened to that. I have one of their old albums, I'll have to go find it and check it out again. I think it was God Fodder? I think the song I remember from it was Kill Your Television. Now I'm going to have to go find it.

edit: Yep, found it. That was the one I was thinking of, but now I see it also has Grey Cell Green on it and I remember that one too.

I really haven't looked at this thread in a while, but there are some good selections here. And some that I wouldn't necessarily play myself.. Phil Collins..shudder..

I've been listening to a lot of Anti-Nowhere League lately. Their songs rock and it's hard not to laugh at some of the lyrics. It's good fun, old dirty Oi punk, and I like it.

I also took Sonic Youth's Goo out for a spin today and it was a nice visit.

Just picked up BLS's new album "Mafia" yesterday and it F'N rocks!!

I've seen BLS and Zakk Wylde in concert twice now and everytime they blow me away. Straight on, hardcore metal. Although I still think 1919 Eternal is their best album.

The thing that sucks is they are playing in Phoenix tomorrow and I won't be able to make it to the show, tickets are only 25 bucks!! I'm disappointed but I'll catch 'em on the next pass.

If you haven't yet, go pick up their new album.

Some of 'em are old school punk bands, seems we have a lot of punks around here :fu :D

Most of the ones just mentioned are metal/punk/hardcore bands. If you're into that stuff you should check 'em out, most of them are classics. However I must say again how rockin' the new Black Label Society CD is.

Also for a good education in punk music read back through this thread and there are mentions of some classic bands to start your musical education.

I have listened to some Black Label Society but don't own any albums. They do rock and this reminds me that I really should go pick some of their stuff up. I first heard of them because Rob Zombie was working with Zakk Wylde and he was really heaping the praises on them.

i had an old sonic youth record a loooong time ago, i think it was "confusion is sex", where they do their own rendition of "now i wanna be your dog".

i use to consider them more of an acid punk band, a little more "acid" than the "butthole surfers" who i never liked, and found it comical when they had a "hit" song in the 90s.

D. Generate

Yeah, the 90's were good to Sonic Youth. Suddenly they were on MTV and everybody was name checking them as an influence.

I don't like all of the Butthole Surfers stuff because they can be kinda bizarre. However Electric Larryland is a really good album and I think it's their most consistent one. I used to get a kick out of how some record bin labels would spell their name: "B***H*** Surfers".

As this was a brief day at work for me, many disks have been flying in and out of the stereo all afternoon:

King Crimson- Power to Believe, Red
Robert Fripp- Blessing of Tears
Bill Nelson- Chimera, Console, Whimsy
Liquid Tension Experiment- First
A Howlin' Wolf compilation that my nephew burned for me
Jeff Beck-Jeff
John Paul Jones-Thunderthief

Now that the day is winding down, I will probably switch to Alison Krauss, maybe later some music from a Doomed Misunderstood Artist- Nick Drake or Johnny Thunders.

There's a song that I've been hearing on XM's Fungus called Max's Kansas City by Wayne County and the Backstreet Boys. Or it might be Wayne County and the Electric Chairs, it appears that the lineup might be in question. Anyway I know of Wayne County, he was a drag queen who became Jayne County and was a staple of the early NY punk scene, but really hadn't heard much music by him. So this song has been in my head a lot lately and I finally went on Amazon and found a Max's Kansas City comp with this song and some of his/her others so I bought it. Great song. Looking forward to getting the album.

Listened to a lot of Social Distortion today and wound the night down with the Beach Boys Pet Sounds. That's a great album.

I been jammin my new iPod on full-shuffle mode in my car for the past week. It is KIL-LER. This morning I had something like this on my ride to work:

Dylan: "Hurricane"
Elliott Smith "Southern Belle"
Descendents "My World"
PJ Harvey "Ballad of Billy Joe"
Dr Dre. "Rat-tat-tat-tat"
Mark Lanegan "Methamphetamine Blues"
Billie Holiday "Gone"
and Beastie Boys "In 3's"

plus a couple things I was not in the mood for - long Miles piece from Sketches of spain, Brian Eno "Music For Airports 2-1", and an Elvis Costello song that was too slow for me today. "Almost Blue" I think.

Hello IHT:

King Crimson is often identified as the founders of "progressive rock," in that their album "In the Court of the Crimson King" circa 1969 introduced elements of free jazz, dissonance, varied and complex time signatures into fairly "mainstream" music. They have gone through many personnel changes through their 35+ year history, but still play music that sharply divides listeners into the love-hate camps.
Robert Fripp is the founder and sole constant member of 'Crim. He has done many sessions as a guest guitarist, teaches seminars in "Guitar Craft", and strongly advocates composer's rights in music biz dealings. His Soundscapes are "a lot of noise from one guitar"- heavy sustain, long electronic delay lines, and processing tones through guitar synth. Strangely moving, sometimes heartbreaking stuff.
Bill Nelson- founder of the "post-glam" Be-Bop Deluxe circa 1974. One of the "axe slingers" of that era, with a wide range of stylistic abilities. Copious solo work- probably 40 or more releases since the early 80's covering everything from piano-based ambient to jungle to found sounds to rockers. Records everything at home!
LTE- a studio jam band with two releases. A lot of "how fast can we play?" stuff, and the amazing Tony Levin on basses.
Howlin' Wolf- powerful electric blues. Manic piano behind some later recordings. Scared the crap out of me when I first heard it as a kid.....
Jeff Beck- Guitar god from the late 60's and 70's, still doing amazing, tasty stuff today. His solo career began to pick up steam with "Wired" ca. 1975, but the fusion jazz character of that one might not be everyone's best intro.
JPJ- bassist for Led Zeppelin. Not the same kinda stuff. "Leafy Meadows" on "Thunderthief" will prove that guys in their late 50's can still balance dexterity and power. (Fripp solo on the track is stellar)

Enjoy!

A live album by Jaco Pastorius for me.

Last night I was listening to The Advantage. Not totally sure what the background of the guy or band is who does the songs, but they're remakes of old video game songs by a rock band. It's oddly compelling and does make for some good background music. I have Marble Madness stuck in my head still.

Definitely go and see 'em, Zakk Wylde is probably one of the greatest guitarists that is still alive. He does awesome shows. Doesn't take a break for 2+ hours, even when the rest of the band takes a quick 10 min cooldown he stays on stage and jams out the solos.

I highly recommend you check it out.

I went to see Motley Crue last night in Chicago. Didn't expect them to be on their game after seeing some of their early reunited performances on TV, but they rocked the house for 2 1/2 hours, good show! Tommy Lee spent 10 minutes with a handheld cam which displayed on the big screen, and it turned into "Girls Gone Wild". Tommy ended the session by asking "Who's your Boy"?

Slowing it down next month when the wife and I are taking our parents to see Elton John.
