View Full Version : Temporary fridge storage
I find myself out of humi space. Until I can donate some sticks to the GIs, is it OK to store a few new arrivals in our spare refrigerator? And, if so, how long is too long?
I also thought about tossing them in an empty Torano or Ashton box I have sitting around, dropping in a small wet sponge and storing on top of the humi.
Thanks for the advice.
I'm Not sure about the fridge,,, I dont freeze and thaw my cigars. But I've always been under the impression that most refridgerators are frost free, thus pulling moisture from the air.
I would find an inexpensive sterilite, or tupperware container with a little dampened floral foam.

Use tupperware or a cooler. Fridges ain't the answer...IMHO.

I have used 1 or 2 gallon size ziplock bags with a couple of "water pillows" to keep entire boxes. Did that for six months with one box and it worked fine. :ss

Throw your hygrometer in the refrigerator and wait about five minutes. You'll see how dry the environment really is. Typically, the RH in most fridges are around 37%, give or take a few percent. The freezer is even worse. Most residential freezers are anywhere from 20% RH to 30% RH.
(Those who freeze cigars and then thaw gradually in the fridge, are normally doing so with their stogies at least double or triple bagged to ensure no humidity is lost from the sticks.....)
There is no real advantage to storing your cigars in the refrigerator. In fact, it could be harmful if left in a container that wasn't truly airtight.
A tupperware container, or similar air-tight device will work well. I would be careful using a sponge that is too damp, as you could be causing your cigars to get over-humidified and then start splitting. You're much better off getting some sort of temporary humidification device like a "water pillow". "humidity wafer" or "humidipack" and put that in the sealed container with your cigars.
