I recently recieved my purchase of the Le Monde Sampler from JR. This has the Ultimate #1s and Principales in EMS, maduro and oscuro. They taste VERY good when they burn right, especially the maduro #1s. As a matter of fact, I like the taste as much as some premium cigars I have had at three times the price.
But, I am very unimpressed with the rolling quality that went into these. Out of the four I have had every one of them had severe burn problems. Burning on one side, runners and most of all they try very hard to go out. To keep them burning I have to draw on them every 10 seconds at times and then they finally bleed off huge white plumes of smoke at the burn end when they begin to burn again. Then the taste is shot due to the heat generated. On closer inspection instead of seeing a single cone burning in the center there are often two or three small cones inside.
Tonight I smoked a #1 maduro and it did the same thing. After it went out twice I gave up and put it down. I then cut it open and low and behold: two massive stems running the entire length of the cigar body! I was most unhappy. These are supposed to be the "best" that JR makes. I know that there is the risk of a bad build with any brand but four out of four? And how hard is is to remove huge stems?
My question is this: Is this the norm for the Ultimates? I really like the taste, look and feel of these but I won't go back if this is common. I was thinking of asking for my money back or returning them for another box. I have seen mixed reviews so I ask the folks I trust most...the LLGs.
Now don't get me wrong. JR's is great. I get most all my cigars there and will continue to do so. I just don't want to give up my hard earned money on Ultimates if this is common.
TIA
