40* or 80* - Which is better to store 'em?

Homebrewer

Stew is good
It's 80* in the house and 78* in the humi. I'm worried about a bug infestation but I have no way to keep them cool, except a big refrigerator that is set at 40*. Would it do the cigars any harm to be at 40* or should I take my chances and let it ride at 78*? The wife isn't going for the Vinotemp any time soon.

Thanks CS!

I don't think it would be real easy to regulate humidity at that low temp. If you're worried about beetles, just freeze your sticks. My cooler usually peaks in the high 70's close to 80 in the summer months, and I haven't had issues. Just make sure to give your sticks a once over every week or two.

Another option you have is, if you have a cooler, to get a few of those reusable ice packs. Feeze them up, and stick one in the cooler in a tupperware with no lid, wrapped in a few paper towels. Just rotate the packs every day so you always have a cold one in the humi. It should knock the temp down about 10 degrees or so, depending on how big the cooler is.

That's the ticket!

I would suggest you freeze all your cigars, and then you don't have to worry about the temperature so much. I was using the blue ice blocks for a while, but they would make all the humidity in my cooler condense on the ice blocks and the RH would drop into the low 50's. I say freeze everything, then you have a much easier time taking care of your cigars.:2

i'm NOT an expert at all. But I have read countless books that say freezing will dry out cigars. The physics behind it make sense. Cold air removes moisture.

cigar magazine just came out with a great article this month that will answer all your questions. ask you local bm to show you the article.

Look at today's thread entitled "Target Vinotemp Sale"...Target is selling them at a darn good price. May be your best bet and your wife may appreciate the "savings"!:tu

I freeze all my sticks, if you triple bag them in ziplock bags you don't have to worry about them drying out. Just remove a much air out of the bags as possible. I use a stray to do this. I find that if you put your baged sticks in Frig: 1 day
Freezer: 3 days
Frig: 1 day
Room Temp: 1 day
Then into your humi you'll be find. Hope this helps:ss.

It's been 78-80 in my desktop humi for about a month now. I've buckled down and have refused to run the AC like I did last year... that cost a fortune! Haven't had a problem yet. Although I do moniter them day and night though :). If you can, get the vinotemp at the local garage sale down the street *wink*wink* :tu
