A beautiful afternoon full of decks and nubbing (pics)

Herfing at 110°
10 years ago we built our deck. It was a great deck with beautiful Western Red Cedar. Unfortunately for us, carpenter ants also thought the deck with beautiful and in the past year, have destroyed a good portion of it. Our pristine, beautiful cedar deck was slowly being eaten! This past weekend we tore up a good portion of the deck and settled on going the safe route with pressure treated lumber.

In the great state of Michigan, the weather has been outstanding the past couple of days- so I took a break from rebuilding to enjoy a cigar that is quite new to my arsenal. A few weeks back 688sonarmen sent me a mega-bomb with a curious stick that I new little about- a Lianos Dos Palmas.

The weather was right, so I figured I'd see if this cigar was worth its marbles...

It is a beautiful cigar. Well constructed and the cut was great. The pre-light draw was firmly consistant.

I lit up and sat back to enjoy this new cigar. Boy am I hooked! A supremely smooth draw. The cigar itself is very mild and seemed like a reliable smoke. Wonderful amounts of smoke and an intriguing complex flavor for how mild the cigar was.

The temperature was great, but it started to get windy- so rather than risking the nice ash, I retreated to the garage to continue smoking the LDP. I was picking up on rolling leather notes and a distinctly classic aroma. I've been experimenting with a lot of different cigars lately and this one fastly established itself as a potential regular.

The ash held firm and long. Like all great cigars, this one got preferential "nub treatment".

Sorry to hear about your deck but congrats on the new deck and the discovery of a new cigar.

I would be happy for you except I'm suffering terrible withdrawl. I smoked my first Padron yesterday and now it's haunting me. I am in desperate want of another and another and another.

I hope that you find a cigar that haunts you as well, maybe this one is it? When you start craving it to the point of dreaming about it you'll know it's the one. :ss

Cheers,
Rob

Shame about that red cedar deck. Bet it was beautiful. Still looks good though. Congrats on the new cigar.

Thanks- it pains me so much to replace such a beautiful (or at least, formerly beautiful) wood with pressure treated lumber.

The best part was that a couple months after initially building the deck- the cost of cedar spiked like 40%!

I hate when Mother Nature ruins the day with things like carpenter ants and termites, especially when it threatens your favorite smoking place...have fun rebuilding your deck!!! Sorry to see it destroyed...

You have a hairy wrist

Egads a hairy wrist, ya know what that means? I hope yens washed your hands before handling that cigar. :r

Nice review Mark, sitting on our deck now. Its a bit windy so I'm puffing on a connie #maduro. These cheap stogies still burn even, even in windy conditions. Even after all the work thats been done here at the barn, the deck is still my favorite. Sorry to hear about yours but glad your getting it back together.

Man, sorry to hear about the demise of your old Western Red Cedar. Best wishes for a long and happy use of the new one. You mentioned you were using treated lumber... hope it is treated with viagra - I heard it will keep your deck up! :ss

Enjoy those quality smokes... Long Ashes!
