A Cigar Journal

I'll be interested in your thoughts after you've had a chance to personally check it out.

Very nice blog, I love the way you've set it up and all that you've got contained there.

Not sure if I want to pick it up. I'd thought the lines were little boxes fromt he pictures of the cover, but alas they weren't. Here's a better picture of it.

I'm going to keep looking for the perfect journal, but this one might be alright. I might just end up with a plain Moleskine journal.

Wow - lots of great info here! Thanks guys. I'm a new cigar smoker, typically smoke outside, and keep telling myself I should jot down my impressions of the cigars as I smoke them. This gives me all sorts of options. :tu

Glad you've found ideas and inspiration, I learned rather quickly that it's helpful for me to make some sort of note on each cigar I smoke; granted it's nothing like you'd read in CA, but it helps me the next time around. I also like being able to look back (someday way back) and see how I've matured in the art/hobby of cigar smoking.

Still looking for that perfect "little black book" though...although there are some definite considerations listed here though. I think I'd personally need to hit the bookstore and get the product in hand before I'd buy. So for now, I'll continue using Cigar Register on the PC (nothing wrong with it, in fact I like it a lot...it's just not a portable option like I'm wanting).

I looked at all of my options and bit the bullet and bought the music notebook. In the end, it's the perfect notebook for me.

My main concern about the regular ruled was that I didn't like the fact that there were going to be empty lines. Weird, I know but it bothers me. I use the lines in the music notebook as a reference to keep me writing straight across and it helps.

I've started using one as a personal journal and will start using my other one for my cigar journal.

I just wanted to bump this thread and update my experience.

My wife has been checking it out to get me a nice cigar journal.

I have been keeping everything at the back of my wine journal.

Thanks!

I've started an excel file BUT I am sure when I find one I will get a paper journal as well... I love the idea

I just went to OfficeMax and bought a hard covered journal with a sewn spine. I glue labels into it with scrapbookers glue and write info and notes under it. Not as fancy as a "Cigar Journal" but it works. :ss

I make them but not that small....I could make a small version of a 6"X9" soft leather covered cigar rating journal w/200 surface pages of parchment paper in a 6”x 5” journal with cigar rating on each page. But Ied have to exclude some of the cigar rating areas. The large size journal includes: a section for the cigar band, ring size, shape, wrapper type, identification of where the wrapper, binder and filler are grown in, cap construction, wrapper construction flavor, other flavors and aromas, draw and burn rate, section for other notes, section for the cigar cost and the section for the overall cigar rating. The smaller version would reduce the cost printing.......

The question is what would you suggest cutting from the journal to fit in a smaller one?

That's the problem, what to cut...it's all important info to have on hand, IMO. Shifting gears, what is the size of the ones you make and what do you sell them for?

If still intrested read on:

First you have to conduct a peradigm shift on these journals when compared to store bought/mass produced make-shift journals. They are expensive both to produce and purchase. All the journals I make they are designed around the 1600 -1800s and are to last a lifetime -then handed down to the next generation.
The current ones are basically 6"wide X 9" tall, 200 surface pages of parchment paper which allows for 199 individual cigar ratings and a section to rubber cement the band in. If you want an opinion as to their quality and worksmanship, call the owners of Bruces pipe shop in Asheville NC. These are not cheap run of the mill ledgers- they are individually hand crafted and assembled from basic materials I obtain from the local area. The printing I do myself and hand sew the paper to the outer leather wrap that I cut from a hide. As a business (www.ttscreations.com) we are listed/featured in www.handmadeinamericacraftregistry.org under the "artists registry", TT's Creations. which also lists our affiliations.

I tried to download Cigar Register, got the file and upon trying to install it said the archive was corrupt. am i doing something wrong?

In the meantime, I found a graph paper notebook that was completely unused (and would probably remain so) which I glued my labels into and have written down notes about the cigars I have smoked. Works for me for now until i have something better. pricewise, If/when I buy a real journal I think I will just go to staples and pick something out.

Wow, that was a bit more than I would have thought, but I totally understand given the process you go through to arrive at the end product.

I may be going the blank book route...for now it's still all on the PC.

I'd send an email/contact Peter (one of the developers), I had some trouble initially downloading the program; emailed Peter and problem solved. He (they) were great and quick to work with.

I use a three ring binder for my ratings, so I can keep everything alphabetical for ez finding. The top of the page has the maker, then each individual smoke has a line or two with an A,B,C,D rating, date smoked, and a few words about the smoke. Not too much about nutmeg or cinnamon, tho!

I also decided to keep an Excel type spread sheet in my computer about my inventory so I know what I have! EZ to forget once you reach three digits! I might even add another column indicating which humidor has the smokes so they will be easy to find!

I do keep a scrap book with bands also- just glue them in once I collect about a dozen or so. Use stick glue.

Just my :2

My journals are for the "High End" customer specifically due to the cost and time to make these journals, they maybe outside someones price range, ability to justify the cost or other personal reasons. 3 ring binders or other ledgers are a price alternative for the individual and are functional. :ss

I'm wondering if any of the Gorillas use a cigar journal of the paper variety? I have used for a while now Cigar Register and I very much like it, but there's something about paper that I can't quite get fully away from. Plus I'd like to have something (more pocket sized) that can travel with me.

Would you happen to know where I might find one? I've searched around a bit online and as of yet haven't really found what I'm looking for. Thanks for any tips/leads/or pointers.

I've got a Cigar Register question for you... I downloaded and I'm trying to add cigars to it (this is the first time I've used it) but I keep getting this "invalid number" error. I've tried plugging numbers in every where and cant get rid of the error... any ideas?
