Sorry if these are dumb questions but i am still new to the world of cigars..

1st - my house tmep is between 68-72 degrees year around and my humidor is between 68-70 rh...is that a good range to be at?

2nd - what would cause a cigar to come apart? i got some cigars and placed them in the humidor last night and didnt see it peeling apart but wheni went to smoke one tonite my excalibur 1066 was coming apart..it was still smokable and quite tasty, but want to make sure my humi didnt cause it...

thanks chris:tu

Yes, it is an acceptable humidity, but some prefer them less damp. But is your hygrometer digital or analog. If it is not calibrated you could be way off.

The humidity can cause a cigar to come apart, over humidified cigars tend to swell and split, under-humidified tend to be brittle and crack. Be sure to let your cigars climatize to your preferable smoking conditions before lighting (typically atleast one week).

Hope that helped :tu

it is analog i am thinking about going to wally world tomorrow and getting a digital.. i calibrated it using the salt method it was at 75%...so when i put the sticks in my humidor i should leave them for a week before smoking? i will try that thanks

digital is definitely the way to go. Adjustable is even better. Your range is good...but as most will say, if it tastes good, then it's ok.:D

Welcome!

Definitely get yourself a digital hygrometer first. From the description you give it sounds like you are too dry or too wet.

Secondly, I always try to let cigars climatize/stabilize to my humidor before I smoke them, unless I just can't wait. Often, online retailers and local B+M's keep their stock over humidified for shipping/travel and for the novice smokers who do not maintain proper environments. :tu

Your ranges sound good to me. Some prefer the RH to be more like 65%, but it is personal preference. You can get an adjustable digital hygrometer here

Contact Shilala and see if he can hook you up with some beads. Makes things so much easier. :tu

Couldn't have said it better myself except I don't think "climatize" is a real word.:r Sounds like it ought to be a word though, LOL!

Climatize is a word but most people now say acclimate instead. I will smoke a cigar right away from a B&M if I note the humidity. Anything from online rests for a min of 2 weeks.

thanks for all the replies everyone i am definatly getting a digital hygro... And i have been thinking about the beads thanks Bax...

You are correct Rolando, my apologies. Firefox better update their spell checker then. :hn

I will say though, there is definitely no "a" in definitely though eyeguy05, LOL!:r Good call, you can't go wrong with beads.

Yea hooked on fonics didnt work for me:tu

If you calibrated your hygro, those readings shouldn't cause a cigar to explode. Where'd you get it? A lot of retailers do a poor job of maintaining rh, and the stick might have been damaged before you even got it.

Just my two cents.
