A Must Read: Smoke, Lies and the Nanny State

Great thread here,,,,not only did I listen to his music and love it but when reading all of his renderings,,,,unless you were locked in a closet and had no way of expressing your own opinion what he is articulating seems to make sense. If you are an objective human being and are not listening to the masses you have to walk away with pretty much the same thoughts Mr. Jackson has,,,,

I understand the prevailing opinions of those who are bothered by smoke in and of itself and how offensive it can be for those who have breathing problems,,,allergies,,,health issues etc. Don't they have the same choices you and I have when it comes to whether or not we want to engage these things in the human marketplace? If I don't agree with abortion issues I don't stroll into the clinics and make myself a pain in the ass,,,,if I don't like or agree with a restaurant that has smoking or non smoking rights,,,I can either go there or not. Why is it that when it comes to our choice of smoking a cigar that it automatically infringes upon on the rights of non smokers,,,,I don't get how they can draw a line that short? I remember living in the Boston area and would go down to the Cape and try to enjoy a cigar on the street,,,on the street mind you where the wind blows free,,,I was told by one of the local beat cops that I had to put out my $10 cigar. I seriously thought he was joking and I just laughed it off,,,but he didn't laugh and he told me a bit more sternly that if I didn't put it out now that he would cite me. Since that moment in time I have been really put out over this issue of "rights" between smokers and non smokers,,,,it's getting "Uglier out There" in terms of our rights and a Boston Tea Party seems to be on the horizon. If we just sit and let them continue this onslaught of taking our right of choice away it won't only be in terms of cigars but other inalienable rights as well,,,:sb

Great article and a good way to make my family and friends stop telling me that secondhand smoking kills!!! :tu

Thank you for the link, it was a very interesting article. My favorite section was on the "fake science" and the fear mongering produced by both the media and anti-smoking groups. Yelling out scary sounding numbers with no intent on backing them up is seen in the news a lot, most of those numbers being about smoking. It scares me knowing many Americans just take the numbers as blind fact and give more power to interest groups who are, amazingly, working for their own interest. I just pray anti-smoking bans won't go as far as alcohol bans during prohibition.
