AF 8-5-8 Maduro

Back in my super newbie days (a mere 2.5 months ago) SmokeyJoe traded with me in order for me to build up my trade numbers. This was way before I understood how Gorilla math worked. It truley was a bomb. In it was a AF SG (not a SG)and I decided today it had rested for 2.5 months, and that was all she was gonna get.

My past 3 or so new cigars have all sucked, hard. Bad burns, bad taste, and just over all bad experiences. I had high hopes on this one as many had praised it. So with an un-sweet ice tea I headed out doors.

I punched today vice the cut, trying something new...... It punched clean and the pre-draw was just short of what to me is medium. A good start as most cigars seem to draw a little harder as the smoke gets shorter. The smell was rich and the coloring very distinct. The leaves were colored like copper looks after it has aged and has that patina patttern, only this was in a brown color. Very unique and nice to look at.

I have been having terrible issues with burns and up front tastes so I tried a different light today:
(see thread http://www.clubstogie.com/vb/showthread.php?t=147122). I went with common book matches. I lit up very nicely and the burn was rock solid from start to finish. The ash was gray, never went black which is an idicator for me the burn is going to be off.

I am perplexed on the taste. It stayed constant all the way to the last quarter where at that point it got a touch spicy, but at a low level. Mostly it was an earthy taste with the leaves on the lips passing a sweet type of taste to the tounge. Not as in sugary sweet but different. Gotta figure out a way to describe it. While not complex, I did not get bored with it. This cigar produced nice smoke and was very smooth. Not creamy, but smooth and none of the tobacco taste (as in cigarette) like my last 3 had. I can see why this is a cigar people hunt for. My third in the AF line up and the best so far.

Here is a pick of my faithful guardian. She wan't so impressed with the cigar and ran off to chase the squirrels.

Thanks for the great smoke, Smokeyjoe. Even though it was a balmy 54* outside, I had a good time smoking it.

Re: AF 8-5-8 Sun Grown

Good review bud! Sorry to hear about your previous experiences with bad smokes but I can always rely on a good AF any day of the week!!

Re: AF 8-5-8 Sun Grown

Nice review but that's not a sungrown. Sungrowns have a black border at the bottom of the band, not green. Looks like a maduro.

Here is a pic of the SG's band:

Whoops, that could my bad. No matter what it "was", it was good. I'll admit to having a hell of a time telling cigars apart. I'm better at smoking them than recognizing them like some of you serious gorillas can. Hehe, I'm still trying to figure out 1/2 the lingo.

Good review. This was one of my first box purchases. I know what you mean by the "sweeter" taste it has. The 858, whether natural, maduro, or sun grown, is one of my favorites. I need to get a few of the candela wrappers soon.

Very nice review. Great pics. Love the weather conditions you were smoking in.....wish I were there with you!! :tu

I'd like to try one again. Not that I didn't like it. I just didn't like it as much as the Cameroon wrapper, which I find to be a consistently good smoke.

Only thing better than a Gurkha would be a Cameroon wrapped Gurkha. I have loved all things Cameroon since I started with cigars. Just something about them that sits good with me. If you haven't tried the H. Uppman Vintage Cameroon, give it a go. Easy smoke that is consistant from stick to stick.

How can VA be better than Fl??? You have young, beautiful college babes running, driving as fast as they can to wear as little as they can on the beaches an in the bars..... It's warm, sunny, what am I missing. I was stationed in Jax for a few years, great place to live.

Dude, that stick is huge! As a noob whose humi contains mostly robustos, it would have taken me 3 hours to smoke that. :ss

Nice review!

Not as big as it looks. 6" in length and about a 50 RG. I smoked it in about a hour and a 1/2 to an hour 45 min. The wind was blowing outside which played a factor.

Nice review. I haven't smoked one of these in quite some time, but every one that I ever have, I really enjoyed. I have several of these in my humi with over 1 1/2 years of age on them. I think I will burn one tomorrow.

Nice review.

And I agree with the folks praising Fuente cigars. I have yet to try one of the maduros but the Hemingway cameroon and Chateau Fuente sungrown smokes I have tried were great.

I have some 858 maduros, a Hemingway Signature maduro, and a couple of Anejos (they're maduros, right?) resting in the humidor now. I think one of them is in my future this weekend....

The taste you couldnt describe was the "Fuente Twang". The 858 maddies have this in abundance, but it does carry over to the Hemis and DCs. I love the 8-5-8 maddie, I always have a box on hand, and they are one of the few NC maddies that get better over time. Taste and burn have always been consistent for me. Thanks for the review!
