i have been having problems with my allergies for a while. i am on allegra and a nasal spray but i dont think it does much. I am planning on going to the allergy doctor, but someone suggested that i dont have any cigars for a month and see if it helps them go away. Does anyone think that this will work? any other suggestions thanks

I have the same problems because of where I live. I know that the cigars definately don't help my allergies, but I would have them even if I quit smoking cigars all togther... And quite honestly, I would rather smoke my cigar and live with the allergies! :2

Allergies suk! When I was an infant, the only thing I could have was soy milk and applesauce. I took alergy injections for the first 6 years of my life. Three times a week, 6 shots in each arm. I am glad to say they worked and I now have very limited allergies.

I would just wait to see what the Dr. says.

I don't think I would really like to find out.

This is gonna sound crazy but.... I have bad allergies and asthma. Ever since I started smokin stogies they have both gotten better. I dont know if I am simply growing out of the asthma and allergies or what. Even my doctor is puzzled. I say smoke more cigars and see what happens:tu

thanks for the feedback. i am probably going to go to the doctor. but it might be all of the tree pollen, which i am allergic to, and now the cotton woods r blooming. and it does seem that when i have a cigar it helps get rid of my postnasal drip.

My allergist is a great guy. I explained to him that I smoke cigars and plan to keep doing it. He explained to me that the main negative effect is on the small hairs of the nose which don't work as well when and after you smoke.

He suggested a Neti Pot to clear out my sinuses each day and it works great. (Do a google search for details.)

My other suggestion is: don't smoke the good stuff when you are too clogged up to appreciate them. The sense of smell is an important part of the cigar smoking experience. I always keep some "cheapies" around for when I want a smoke but my sinuses are acting up on me.

thanks oldforge ill look into that neti pot. but being stuffed up is not the problem, its having alot of post nasal drip and having a nagging cough that annoys me and make me clear my throat alot. thanks for the advice though

If your allergies are bad enough they will either give you a shot of steroids, or give you tablets to take over the course of a few days. They will work wonders by taking away the symptoms of your allergies.

In fact, you will feel great for a while. Expect a spike in your appetite, increased energy, & your spouse, or significant other, will want to kill you because you won't want to go to bed. You'll be saying stuff like, "C'mon honey, I know it's midnight, but don't you want to play another game of monopoly?"

The doctor will limit this type of treatment due to the long term side effects that they can cause, but won't object to it once or twice a year.

I had to get shots a couple of years in a row because allergies would cause the whites of my eyes to swell out past the cornea & pupil. I looked like Arnold in "Total Recall' when he was trapped outside the dome on Mars with no air. :)

Have you tried Zyrtec? I know I tried Flonase, Claritin and the only one that works for me is Zyrtec.

I know if I smoke too many days in a row, I get a little short of breath when my allergies are bad. I normally take a Zyrtec and everything is better. Sometimes if my allergies are acting up, I will take one before smoking just in case.

i take allegra and it is allright, but i will look into the one mentioned previously too. and i use rihnocort nasal spray or something like that

Staying away from cigars might actually help. I have bad allergies, dust, pollen, smoke all send my sinus to hell.
What sucks even more is when we have VOG, when that crap comes by, it sends mucus down my nose and through like niagra falls, not to mention my eyes get all water and blowing my nose or spitting never helps.

Sometimes I'll smoke a cigar at night and my sinus will be clear the next morning and I'll be fine, but some other nights I'll smoke a cigar and it'll be as if I was sniffing dust like scarface sniffs coke.

Ditto. Zyrtec is great and its now over the counter. Get the 24 hour capsules. I take one in the morning and by lunchtime my allergies are pretty much under control.

OP, I feel your pain, good luck :tu

if he puts you on meds, ask for Xyzal....by far the best rx allergy med yet IMO.

The doctor gave me some samples of this and it did work well, but my insurance said they wouldn't pay for it yet. I guess it's still to new. So back to Allegra.......so so.

As far as smoking with allergies, I notice if I take a couple days off, my allergies do get a little better. But I have trouble going a couple days without smoking.

I did buy a version of the neti. It looks like a injector. It doesn't' matter if your stuffed up or not. It actually helps clear out some of the allergens that are hanging out in your sinuses. Seems to help for me for a couple of hours, but is not a long term fix for me. After a day outside, I will use it when I am going to stay in for a while.

Oh well, off to mow the lawn.

thanks for the advice. i think i will take everyones advice into account and reduce my cigar intake instead of stopping it, at least untill all that pollen is done blowing around. and when i got to my allergist ill ask her about that maedicine. thanks all

Started out with bad allergies about 25 years ago. Had shots and have used more medicine then Heinz has sauces! Fortunately the shots helped and over time the allergies have pretty much subsided and no longer cause severe asthma. I can say that smoking a cigar never affected my symptoms.

I use Allegra D which works the best for me in the spring when the mold count is high.
