Anyone DIY a ventilation system?

I have an enclosed porch with windows on 3 sides. In the winter I only crack a few windows and fire up a propane infared heater. I need more ventilation but, also need a heat exchanger to recup some the heat I will lose. Has any one built such a system and how well did it work?

Have you installed roof vents. These vents also allow heat to escape during the summer. You can also install a fan to help move teh air/smoke upward into the vents.
 
I have thought about having vents in the ceiling, going out to the roof eves.
I would like to have a heat exchanger to warm the incoming air, using the outgoing airs heat. I have started looking for air to air heat exchangers but, they appear to be very pricey.
